Need help on a 3 and 8 skillet please
« on: February 07, 2014, 09:16:20 PM »
Hello!  I'm new here and just found out that there are a lot of reproductions and fakes for Griswold cast iron :-/

If I posted a few pictures of my first two skillets I just bought, would you guys be able to help me decide if I just purchased the real deal or if I got taken?  The 8 looks like it could be real but I'm a little concerned about the 3...

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Forum, Garrett, and yes we'd be glad to help you with authentic vs. repro.

A good size for pictures is 480 x 640 pixels, and you can attach three pictures to one post.  We should be able to verify authenticity with a clear picture of each skillet showing the bottom markings and also the handle.

Feel free to also check our repro page -- lots of good info there:

Hey Sandy, thank you for the kind words :-)  I'll try to post a few pictures I just took.  I am interested to hear your thoughts.  First is the no. 3

Thank you Will, that's good to hear!  I was reading online last night about rough castings, different fonts, grinder marks, and weight all being tell tale signs of reproductions/fakes and I guess I'm kind of paranoid now.

Some of the things that worried me is that even with these two the slanted Griswold fonts were different?  I was looking at the "W" in both as well as the font for the "3" (looks more computerish?).  Do you know why the 3 doesn't have the number stamped on the handle and why the ERIE is in parentheses?  Others I see do not have the parentheses.

This is my first dive into cast iron and they are both for my wife as a sixth anniversary wedding present (traditionally iron).  I love the fact that these could be close to 100 years old and don't want to give her a fake!  :-)

Whew! :-)  Thank you all very much.  I feel a lot better now and like I have the added confidence to know what to watch out for, thanks to the members and great information on this forum.  Cast iron hunting is starting to be addictive!
