How many Cast Iron Pans?
« on: November 26, 2004, 11:53:37 PM »
I'd like to poll everyone to see how many pans people have in their collections.  I think I have about 10 so far.  Only use the two later model Griswolds.   I'm just curious to see if I'm crazy for having 10 or if that's a reasonable lower number.

John, What do you mean? What are you calling a pan? Do you mean how many skillets? Do you mean how many dutch ovens? Do you mean how many waffle irons? Sorry to be so picky but it does make a difference.

By "pans" do you mean skillets only?  Or all iron cookware?  You are just getting started but have already reached the crazy number.  I have a few more at around 140 skillets but that's nothing compared with some collectors.  I remember the good old days when I had ONE skillet; a No.8 Victor from my mom.  I sure had a lot of fun ahead of me back then...and learning, etc.  At one time I had 23 or 24 different Griswold No.3 skillets and was missing a few other variations.

Woops!  Skillets since they seem to be the most collected.

I'd say I have roughly 90 to 100 skillets. I will sell a few to thin them out but turn right around and buy more. So you're not crazy yet John, but you're working on it. Well I'm off to see what I can find today.

About 75 here. But, I am very picky about the quality and I will cook in any of them except a couple that are new with label. Nothing like making cornbread in a large block #13 or the #2. You can see the pic of the cornbread out of the #14 large block in "too many cooks".
Hold still rabbit, so I can cook you.

John I have 142 on inventory + one I bought today and I do collect mostly skillets. If you take all the sk. that these (WAGS menbers) told you that thay have just X it 4 times is the amount of cast iron pieces thay have. there is more to cast iron than just skillets.  ;D

I'm afraid to count them, but over 100, I like to pick up an example of any named or gate marked pan that was made. Must  have 15 or 20 different pans with a name on them.

Last week bought a skillet that had so much crud on the botton that you could not read anything. It looked just like an ERIE #9 and thought it was. I cleaned it up and it had a ghost ERIE mark on top and MARION near the bottom! :D Thats one you don't see every day.So John collect as many as you want and don't worry if you are crazy. You have plenty of company ;D. My family thinks I'm completely nuts.

25 skillets since May 04 :o About 8 DO's; 6 muffin/cornbred pans; 2 sad irons, and 4 Griswold stove
dampers. Going after a few camp ovens to use now. That was my initial intention when I  started out. THEN, I RAN ACROSS THIS SITE AND GOT SIDE TRACKED [smiley=alc.gif]

I've got three racks that hold 96 skillets each, one that holds 48, a couple of dozen displayed on the wall, an upright stand that holds the block heat ring set, two or three sets on top of vintage trunks, and a cupboard full of pieces I don't have room to display as well as extras. I can't put anything on E-Bay for fear that I will see it and buy it. And all of this because I wanted to buy Pat an old waffle iron as a gift.

I'm not a huge skillet collector but I probably have 100. I just have one complete set (almost) of block logos that I cook in and then I also collect #8 chicken fryers and I have a whole room full of #3 skillets hanging on the wall. This is a fun size to collect in that they are not that expensive and practically every company that made case iron made this size skillet.

Between my family room and kitchen there are 235 skillets alone. Well over 120 waffle irons, 8 broilers, 10 wafer irons, 18 dutch ovens, 10 coffee grinders. Not to mention the wide variety of trivets, ashtrays, muffin pans, cherry stoners, sausage stuffers, and anything else that may strike my fancy. And I think I am very reasonable.... Tom

To Bob Logan on your chicken fryers, have you got an "ERIE" number 10 deep skillet?I think they are beautiful and would like to have one. I have seen them on EBAY and they go awfully high, or seem to, the ones that I have seen anyway. I have a couple 8's and one 9 double skillet with the deep bottom in chrome but the black cast iron number 10 is what I would like to have to cook in.

Perry, I have a #10 " ERIE" 734 deep sk (3.25"), a very good looking black iron pan. I found it in Renninger's Pa. I have a #9 slant/Griswold Erie deep sk 733, 3.25 "deep. I guess I will have to find a #8 deep sk. I just love my cast iron  ;)I don't think thay make covers for deep sk.?
P.S. not for sale  ;D

Clark, now if you was to come my way on that skillet some I might be inclined to tell you about this guy that I met. I was in Columbus some time ago and went to an antique store looking for cast iron. The owner told me that he did not have much but he gave me a phone number of a guy who had some. The owner told me that the guy was an odd duck, but he did have cast iron. I called the guy, he lives alone, and he gave me directions how to get there. When I got there I did not have a lot of money but had a little. I bought one small piece from him for around 20.00. BUT, what he showed me was awesome. He has two barns full of cast iron. He only took me to one of them because he said it was easier to get around in that one. He had cast iron stacked and stacked and stacked. Skillets, dutch ovens, great big kettles, like you boil water in to kill a hog, and it was sitting and stacked everywhere. You could hardly squeeze throught the place. He would not take me to the other place because he said he had junk in the doorway and he didn't feel like moving it. I asked him if I could come back and he said yes. I have called him three times since and tried to go back but he comes up with some stupid excuse as to why I can't come, every time. Like I said, he is weird. He told me he has been collecting for at least 30 years. It is quite a place and he is quite a guy, you might have better luck with him than me. I do remember that I saw a number 14 Pie Wagner and he asked 125.00 for it. I can't even remember what else he had. I would go through a stack and put it all back and then go through another stack. It was some experience. I don't think he would have let me come that first time if the other guy had not of called him. And he don't care if he sells anything or not. He likes cast iron, he don't clean it up, he just stacks it up.

I sure would love to see that guy's barn Perry.  Love to look through piles of old, unrestored skillets and other pieces.  It's amazing what one can find in such a place.  Not just rare pieces but neat stuff I like that can even be plain and simple.

Erie No.10 deep skillets are a rare item.  No covers for Griswold's deep skillets but Wagner's had them on some pans (the Skillet Roasters) and they are very nice pans but hard to find.

WOW! that makes me feel a little better about my collection.  I thought I was losing it, but I'm still in pretty good shape.
