Would anyone happen to know?
« on: August 16, 2006, 10:49:50 AM »
Morning Everyone!

Yesterday I picked up this griddle at a local thrift store. It has no maker mark but it does have "8" on the underside of both of the handles. Which is really why I bought it since I thought they were really pretty and a neat little pour spout on the side.
I will post pictures and if anyone has any idea's of when it was made or value I would sure appreciate your imput. Thanks much in advance.

Have a great day!
Liz

Hello Steve, Wow... I am surprised you haven't seen a piece like this before. I consider myself very novice with Cast Iron and that is one of the reasons I joined WAGS and try to follow and learn whenever possible. This piece definately caught my interest with its unusual curvy handles and side spout. Its not in too terrible condition and I will probably try cleaning it up alittle bit to get a closer look at the detail. It looks like there are some cast marks on the bottom but I can't make it out if they are Gate marks ?? til I get it cleaned up somewhat better.
I appreciate your reply thanks

I agree, interesting pan.  Almost like a combo of a long pan/sad iron heater with a griddle.  Very nice.  Would love to see photo of bottom.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Well Liz, I've only been messing with iron for about 30 years, and I have never seen a retangular griddle with a pour spout. Not only is it unusual but it looks to have a nice casting as well.   Hey Charles, could this be "eye candy"?

I have one just like it, very nice light casting, no name with a gate mark.  It weighs about 1/2 of what a Griswold griddle weighs.

With out maker marks on this is there a way to ever find out who made this griddle?  Could it have been made in Canada? There is something about the handles that makes me think  that.  It almost has a Euro design.

Thanks for all of the great imput and feedback on my quest to gather more information on this neat skillet/sad iron/griddle. I have to get it in the electro bath soon and get it seasoned then I will post pictures. The bottom is alittle pitted which leads me to believe this was probably used alot but the cooking side is smooth and in very good condition so I am thinking that makes sense and was probably a user.
It feels on the lighter side about 6.5 lbs and has a nice feel to the iron. The size is 20" by 10" side to side.
* I was wondering what would the "8" number on the bottom of both handles mean?
* Curious, what is a griswold or wagner weight for this size griddle?

hoping these questions make for Interesting conversation .. Thanks again!

It was made to fit a No.8 size stove.  Old wood and coal ranges came in different sizes (7 and 8 were the common sizes but there probably were some 9s).  Sometimes the sizes seem to be relative and you could use a No.7 on a No.8 stove (or any size for that matter) but some pieces fit a certain size stove lid opening better.  Then again, it seems to me that many of the size numbers are only relative and, if you wanted a medium sized pan of any style you would pick a No.8 mostly.  For some reason kettles and bowls were often sized differently (2-5) but dutch ovens, skillets, griddles, and many other pieces were sized relative to one another.  Basically I am saying that I don't know the exact answer but these are my thoughts.
