Griswold #7 W/I Handles
« on: June 10, 2006, 04:13:06 PM »
I know ya'll hope that I'll run out of questions or at least be able to anwser one sometime :), but here's another question.

#7 Griswold waffle iron- it has metal handles-not Alaskan- see pics- are these replacement handles or are they original?  Also note the 2 PATD' dates 5-14-01 and 5-21-01, thought this was unusual.  Mike

Mike, no we hope you don't run out of questions. Thats what keeps this place going. Thats a nice waffle iron. From a distance the handle inserts look like wood. The closer pictures show the handles better, and its still hard to tell. If you say they are iron or metal you should know, but I have never seen or heard tell of a waffle iron having such handles. Those handles look to me like somebody put them on themselves and sure don't look factory. The whole idea of wood or alaskan handles was so the heat would not go through the handle to the user, so I don't think there is anyway a factory would have put them on. Thats my opinion anyway, for what its worth.

Perry, this was an Ebay purchase and I thought they were wood also- until I got in hand.  They are metal for sure! Ebay pics fooled me. I knew of wood and Alaskan, I have never seen this type of handle in metal.  Wanted to check here since there is alot I've not seen. I thought the same as you- better have a heavy glove or pot holder when cooking with this thing.  Who ever did this replacement sure made it look good. Any thoughts on the double patent dates? Mike

The first patent date is for the frame but I don't know what the second date patent is for.  Note that your iron is marked "THE NEW AMERICAN" while previous irons were just THE AMERICAN and later irons were AMERICAN.  Maybe the latter date is for whatever makes the iron "NEW".  Someone recently posted about their NEW AMERICAN and I have had several of them in the past but don't know or recall what the NEW feature is.

Are the metal handles open on the ends or does the metal wrap around closing off where an opening on tubing would be?  Might have been some type of replacement handles or, if the handle are just straight tubing, I would think they were added by someone.  I once saw a Griswold waffle iron with steel tubing brazed into the handle sockets.  If you find the handles are replacements and home made you can remove them and pretty easily make perfect replicas of the original handles if you have an original to copy exactly.

If anyone has the time and ability to research that later patent date on these irons it would be nice to add to our patent base.

Steve- the handles are solid metal- not tubing.  I can see where they were ground to fit into the 'irons'.  Also I can see where they smoothed the head of pin that holds the handle in place on the iron.  Who ever did this replacement made sure it was a great fit.  I know it's not original, but neither would replacement wood handles.  I think it will stay as is.  Only 7 days between patent dates, seems like it must have been 2 different patents or they would have just changed the date on the pattern.  Also it has the 'acorn' style hinge if this info helps.  Mike

It took a while, but I finally found this one.  I posted the full patent on the patent board.

Mike,
Does your frame have the suspended ball socket as shown in the patent drawing?  I've seen a few frames like that but they aren't common.

I think I understand 'suspended ball socket' and no, mine does not.

Pic of socket.
