Unmarked Bundt Pan Maker
« on: May 21, 2006, 09:25:12 PM »
I recently purchased and unmarked bundt pan.  It has no markings on it. I have seen a couple on ebay but they went higher than than I wanted to bid (plus high shipping). I got this one for little more than ebay shipping.  It is a good casting and in great condition.  Does anyone know who made them/it.  I bought it to use, but I'm curious about the maker.   I can post a pic if needed.  Mike

Many makers of these pans which had to have a name other than "bundt pan" since I think it was Nordic Ware who invented that name.  But I, too, call them all Bundt Pans.  A photo might help if it's an unmarked Wagner.  Many were shipped over from Europe but those usually are porcelain on at least one side.  Lodge also made them in more recent times (1980's or thereabouts).

Steve- I did purchase the 'bundt' pan at a antique mall that is located about 150 miles from the Lodge Foundry and thought it might be Lodge by it's casting but couldn't find any info about it in the books.  A couple of pics in the as found condition.   Thanks, Mike

That might be a Lodge but not a Wagner.  Are there any marks underneat either handle?  Could be a dot or dots or a short line or lines or whatever.

Steve- there is a dot centered under one handle.  I hadn't noticed it, thought it was a small casting flaw but under close check it appears to be a distinct mark.  Here's a pic,  in hand the dot is more distinct than shows in the picture. Mike

The Austrian/German traditional Kugelhopf pan was said to be the inspiration for the Nordicware Bundt pan.  You can use Google to find some nice recipes for this bread.  Looks pretty tasty.  Haven't made it myself although I do have a pan or two.

Mike, almost certain that's a Lodge from c.1980's though I don't know from when to when they made them.  I do remember seeing them new in stores back then along with the card suit muffin pan which Lodge made back in the c.1940 period also.  The old ones usually have the little raised letter typical of older Lodge and a fine, smooth grain casting.   The newer 1980's card suit pan was coarser grained and I think also had a dot or two under the handle.

I looked this up awhile back for a friend.  According to this its a Lodge.  Here is one posting from a woman:

"My mom had a cast iron bundt pan that had been handed down, and I wanted my own. Lodge was the only company making them, and they stopped recently (as of 10/02). You'll have to look around -- I found mine via the web at a hardware store in New York...."

Thanks-Steve, Tom, and Jerry for the info.  I bought this to use so I'm not concerned of the age or collector value.  I got this pan and a #9 Gris waffle iron from the same gentleman and we haggled a little for price, so it depends how you divide it how much it cost me.  If I say I have $30 in this pan I still got a great price for the #9 waffle iron.  As usual I still get amazed at all the knowledge here at WAGs.  Steve easily ID this with a dot that I really hadn't noticed.  Thanks again, Mike

Didn't know about the dot under the handle signifying Lodge.  Thanks for the tidbit, Steve.  I think I'll start a notebook titled "Steve's Tidbits."

Marty, I don't know what the dot means and I think I have seen pieces with more than one dot.  When I was early in my collecting iron career I used to go to a store that carried a lot of Lodge including these bundt's and their 14 skillet, etc.  I noticed some of the small details.  For instance, I could compare my old Lodge card suit pan with a new one and noticed the old one was slightly larger so Lodge may have used an original to make the pattern for their newer one. Maybe they lost or destroyed the original pattern.

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

The bid now is $42.09 and ship to me is $23.70 total $65.79.  A few more $$ on the bid I  got a nice #9 Griswold waffle iron free in my deal.  :) :) :) :) Mike

I got this pan to use- It wasn't too bad but I cleaned and reseasoned anyway.  Here's some pics of my first try at cooking in it.

Wow Mike, that looks good. I hate to ask this, but is it a bundt cake? And, if it is, can you also put icing on it, or should you, or is it a matter of preference? Boy it sure come out good, no holes tore in it or anything. Congratulations.  :)

Perry -It's called a pound cake. Right out of a Duncan Hines yellow cake mix box.  Receipt on side of box just the mix and a box of vanilla instant pudding .  It's great with icing as you like.  It's an easy family favorite and we just leave plain and each adds the topping of their choice.  Still sipping the coffee after my share :) :).  I had never baked in iron so this was a test run and it turned out perfect :P.
