Preston, is that a camp oven or a spider skillet?

Roger Its like the one on page 212, red book, upper left. It looks just like the 16 pictured except mine is a #12.

Thanks, Preston

Nobody ever did say, so for those that may not have the red book, I looked it up and the one Preston has is a number 12 camp oven, with the legs.

Well Preston, while a spider can look like a lot of things, in our case a spider is generally a long handled skillet, with or without a top, and it has legs on it, like your camp oven has, so that it can be placed right in and above the coals for cooking. There are a lot of very old spiders out there with gate marks. We don't know just exactly who made them but from their abundance, I believe it would be safe to say they were manufactured by a lot of different foundries. Thats my story anyway and I'm stickin to it.

Troy might come on here and try to tell you a big bunch of lies but I thought I'd try to get the truth out first. ;D

I have the #14 Martin Spider like Perry said, and with the camp oven lid. You would think that with a big Martin sk. or spider that the handle would be just a little bit bigger? this thing is the best looking spider that I have seen, will not counting them #8 Erie Spiders  ;) You know what I mean Perry.

Man oh man Scott, it'd take two men and a boy to pick that baby up empty, let alone full of something, but it'd be worth it. I smell it cooking now.  ;D

I would have liked to have won that one, but it went a little higher than I wanted to bid, and shipping on top of that......but boy I was sure watching it.   Makes you wonder how she can ship that heavy thing for 13 something, and other sellers charge that much or more for much smaller items.  That big ol spider would sure cook up a mess of prairie oysters.   ;D

A friend of mine has one of those ol Martin spiders that belonged to his mother. Will not budge to sell.  The skillet handles are unique but not near a handy as a bail when cooking over hot coals. Just my opinion...

That spider is a beauty Scott. I agree with Perry they are heavy. I will have the bottom half out of the soup this weekend. Will take a picture of the lid and bottom if anyone is interested in seeing.
