Griswold Griddle

Hello

I have a Griswold Griddle that was my grandmothers it is 9" wide by 22" long including the handles.
It has a hole in each handle with a number 8 . On the back is the griswold logo in block letter with Erie PA
USA also another #8 and a 745A all in block not italic. My question is what year was it made. This is a sentimental piece for me.

Thank You

Bridget

Hello Bridget, welcome to WAGS. :)

Well, I wouldn't swear to it, but the A might mean aluminum. Is it aluminum? See if a magnet sticks to it. If it does stick to it that means it is cast iron rather than aluminum. As for age, according to the Book of Griswold and Wagner by Smith and Wafford, the number 7 griddle, pattern number 744 was made circa 1925 to 1950, so yours being a 745 number, that should fit right in there as well. Thats my take on it anyway.

Again, thanks for stopping in, don't be a stranger, come back and check us out.

Those dates are interesting Perry. Here is another thought. The large block logo was made c. 1930 - 1939. I may be wrong here but, I think the earlier dates (1925-1930) you mentioned would be slant (or italic) logo, and the latter dates (1939-1950) would be small logo. Any input anyone?
Hold still rabbit, so I can cook you.

The slant TM I think went up to around 1924 which is the date that Griswold registered its block TM if I am interpreting the US Trademark Office info.  The small TM came out as far as I know in 1939 but probably only on hinged and hammered pieces.  But probably by c.1941 the small TM was much more used with some few pieces keeping the large TM for many more years.  Anyway, 1925 definitely saw the block TM on many or most items.  My early Nos. 7 and 8 Griswold skillet covers have the block TM and Pat. Appld For.  That patent, when issued, was dated 1925 so these covers are 1924 or 1925 and with the block TM.
