Marion #11 Reinforced handle
« on: February 22, 2006, 10:06:55 PM »
Hello All,

I have the opportunity to buy a very nice Marion #11 pan. It looks like it has the older style handles with both a reinforced pad and a reinforced rim. I've sent in my memebrship and am still waiting patiently for access to the foundry information on the dark side...In the meantime, can anyone tell me about the Marion foundry, including value estimation? I think I can get this pan for about $35. It's in beautiful shape, with the only flaw being a few gouges or rough spots on the handle - looks like they were never polished out after casting.

Also, I fell in love with a lightweight #7 Favorite/Piqua Ware with a MIAMI in the middle the other day while junking around, and brought it home for $19. It's a beautiful casting, and easy to cook with. I think it was a good deal, but I don't see any mention of the Miami brand in the blue book - can anybody give me an age for it?
Most gratefully, carla

Carla, getting such nice skillets makes me wonder when you are going to join WAGS.  Hurry!   I've forgotten what I knew about Marion (from Marion, Ohio) but their pans seem to be copies from ERIE pans or old ERIE patterns and excellent ones at that.  I have a nickled Marion 8 that I like better than ERIE skillets.  Definitely pick up the 11 for that price.  Miami was the less expensive line of Favorite (Pique, Ohio is in Miami County and that' where the name comes from).  Made in sizes 7-9 and in a number of variations.  I have the only nickeled one that I remember seeing and it has the reinforced top rim but no handle pad.  Not polished on the plated surfaces like Griswold did but still a very nice pan.  Even though Miami was a cheaper line its quality seems up to their regular line in all respects.  Nice find.  Join WAGS??

Hey, that's all fun to hear! I've sent in my check to WAGS...it's "in the mail" -- last week,  honest!! I guess now I'm just waiting for some kind of welcome packet that will let me in on the other side of the furum...?

BTW - did you see that older gatemarked skillet on ebay that sold yesterday? It had a filigreed handle and a number 8. I thought about getting it, but with that heavy rolled lip, and not knowing anything about it, I passed. Thought you might have seen it and know a bit about it...

Steve, we have quite a bit of information on Marion. That is Marion, of Marion, Indiana, not Ohio. It is all interesting stuff. In short Marion came from Sidney, Ohio and had ties to Wagner, so I'd say if anything, their skillets, the early ones anyway, favor the early Wagners, with the reinforced pad and rim and all. Anyway Carla, I'm glad to see you coming over to the "dark side". Maybe that green walker symbol you got for yourself can finally set down a rest a spell.

Carla,

First,  welcome to WAGS.   Glad to have you here.   Ask any questions you have.   There is a great variety of people here.

Second,  if you don't want that pan,  send it my way.   Anyones #11 pan is worth $35.00   And Marion is not common at all.   Nice find.   Can you post a picture of it when you get it.

Thanks!!!!

Great Carla about joining WAGS.  Yes, I saw that old skillet.  They are somewhat common as far as the nicer old pans go and made in at least sizes 6-11.  Probably one of the few old series you can put a set together in time.  Bottoms are usually warped (or made that way) downwards.  They seem to come mostly from NY so that's where I put their manufacture but have no idea who was the maker.

Perry, thanks for correcting me.  I know I have the Marion info somewhere but didn't dig it out.  Was it you who sent me the info a year or two ago?  My Marion 8 has a ghost ERIE mark on the bottom and I think I have seen others with an ERIE ghost so that's why I said Marion was a copy from an ERIE.  Not that they might not have made some Wagner copies also.  Just don't know that I've seen such.

Steve, yes it was me that sent you the Marion information. I do believe some of that information has been put on the foundry pages. Another reason to belong to the "dark side".

If the info is not on the Foundry pages, I have it in my office at home, somewhere, as Perry sent me a packet years ago and I have not scanned and posted it yet.

SO I went back to the place where the Marion #11 resides, and took my ruler this time (but not the camera - oops.)  It does have a slight bow to it: the gap difference between the middle of the pan and the outside is about 1/16th of an inch on the outside, and 1/32 at the center. Since I'm only just now learning about these older pans, is that an acceptable amount? The inside of the pan is completely flat when a ruler is laid on it. Also, the back has two or three small pits - maybe as much as an 1/8th in diameter. Sorry to be so anal, but I want to make sure that this is in great condition and that another one doesn't come along that I wish I'd waited for...not that I can really prevent that...thanks.

#11 from any foundry are tough to find.  At 35 with a slight bow, I'd buy it for at least a user item.

Carla, that amount of bow sounds ok to me.  Few skillets were cast perfectly flat.  I had a Wapak 14 skillet that bowed up on the inside and down on the outside meaning it was thicker in the center than around the outter part of the bottom.  Cast that way.  Often just looking at a skillet you can decide if the bottom meets your criteria.  I try for very flat surfaces but can't always get the pans I want that are perfect.  I think it's more important to have a flat cooking surface than the bottom (underside) of the pan and 1/16" bow is about what I can accept on a medium or larger pan.

Some pits from casting on pans is common and you have to determine if they bother you enough to reject the pan.

Carla,  are you saying that it bows down,  but not past the heat ring?   Does it sit on the heat ring and not rock?   If so,  the pan is worth the $35.00   I may be interested in it if you don't want it.   Like it was said,  anyones #11 pan is worth $35.00   It is a not common size.

Thanks everybody. The pan does sit on the heat ring - barely, but it does. And it looks great to me, since I haven't seen any "perfect" pans of that age, anyway. I couldn't go for it today, but tomorrow I'll pick it up and keep it around for a while. If I decide to sell it, I'll give you an e-space jingle, Will, since you mentioned it to me first.

And Sandy, about those items on your shopping list: don't tell Perry, but I think I get them all for you, for about $5 bucks. That sound all right?? Ssshhh - just between us gals.
