Waffle Iron Base Mis-Match?
« on: February 19, 2006, 10:43:56 PM »
This is a waffle iron that I just got out of the electro-bath.  It was so very rusty when I originally bought it that I never handled it much, and so didn't notice the ill fit between the iron and the base.  The irons can be pulled back to center in the base, but the socket is deep enough that it tends to pull the ball hinge back, thus drawing the irons back as you see pictured.

Would someone here mind taking a look at these photos for me and let me know if I've got a base that is really mis-matched to the Griswold waffle iron?  Could it be a base from a different Griswold version, or is it from a different maker?

I planned on simply turning it around on eBay (got it for $25), and I want to be sure to have an accurate description for the bidders.

Thanks folks.  :)

Ellery, that is a matched set.  The paddles should be 979 & 980 with the base number 978.  Do you think that it is warped in any way?

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Thanks for the quick reply.  No, neither the base nor the paddles are warped.  And you say the base is a matched Griswold, so I guess that there's just something about the base socket that strongly draws the paddles.  I'll look to see  if there is anything to be figured out about it.

The one I have just finished seasoning for my wife, I love.  We're planning to try it out for the first time tomorrow.  We haven't decided who's recipe to try first Greg's or Darrel's.  :)

Ellery, Is the notch on the frame where the handles of the iron sit round or square bottomed?  If round bottomed the frame may be for an earlier and slightly different iron.  Whether that alone would cause the slight problem I don't know.

It is squared.  In just a moment I'm going to the iron out again and have another look at it.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Okay, I played with it a little more investigatively.  I find that the ball and socket does seem ill-fitting.  It is what it is, but at least I know that it is indeed a Griswold base -- thanks again.  :)

Here's some photos I took while playing detective with the piece.  I assume that the fit is usually not this... sloppy, in this variation of waffle iron, yes?  The 1922 patented waffle iron that is my only other sample has a fit like a good knee.

It's hard to tell in this first photo, but there's a lot of space between the ball and the socket.

Another perspective trying to show gap:

Next, this image shows that the socket is much deeper than the hinge ball.

Another perspective:

Just the socket:
