Wagner 1408 Waffle Iron
« on: February 18, 2006, 09:07:29 PM »
It's ya'alls fault. ;D I started this with an interest in Camp Ovens. Then thanks to Steve, gate-marked skillets, then Wagner skillets, and today a Waffle Iron with Alaskan handles. At an estate sale today, I purchased a Wagner 1408 Waffle Iron. This one has a high base however.  My question, did the 1408 come with a high base or did someone put it on a different base? The red book lists this waffle iron as a low base. Could one pick what base they wanted? Or did they come together as a set? Did Wagner mark the base in anyway? And why did they call the handles, Alaskan Handles?
Thanks, Dwayne

Dwayne, yes you are hooked. I can't answer all your questions but can tell you this much. Wagner made waffle irons about anyway you wanted them, cast iron, aluminum, high base or low base, and in tons of shapes and sizes. There is actually a world of collection in Waffle Irons alone. I said, sometime ago, that I would not tread upon the waffle iron waters, but alas, I have eaten my words. They are an interesting sort.

As far as the Alaskan handles, thats a good question. I don't know and would like to know too. The only thing I can maybe think of is they called them Alaska because they stayed as cool as Alaska and you didn't get burnt on them. That is what happens, whether they call them that because of that, I don't know, but it sounds about as plausible as anything.

1408 is a low frame iron while 1418 is the catalog number for the high frame.  BUT, the irons should, as far as I know, be marked only 1408 and were used on the catalog 1408 low and 1418 high frames.  Wagner always shipped wood handle irons unless wire coil handles were specified.

Hey Dwayne, remember that to get the most out of your new waffle iron, turn to the Stupid Waffle Iron Tricks thread in the Too Many Chefs . . . section. Those waffle iron hash browns are really good!

Dwayne, I also have a Wagner 1408 (on the irons) with high base and coil handles.
My base doesn't have any markings other than the letter 'D'.  I use it regularly for waffles and Charles' hashbrowns.  Enjoy!!  Mike

Mike where is the "D" located on the base?

On the underside of the base directly under where the ball of the irons fit.  Mike
