4 in 1
« on: October 03, 2005, 07:50:07 PM »
About 10  years ago I found and bought a hammered lid/griddle marked 4 in 1 on a logo that looked very much like a Griswold cross. I have been looking for the bottom of the set ever since. Every once in a while I saw a complete set but they where always too expensive for me. Yesterday I found one in a garage sale, factory perfect, for 10 dollars and bought it. I have tried to find out who made it but with no luck. The books I have do not have it listed and I could find nothing using the search of this site. Do any of you know anything about this 4 in 1 logo?

There was something discussed about this 4 in 1 a year or two ago.  I just can't remember what was said, but that's not surprising.    They are neat pieces. Have you done a search of the forum?  You should get more erudite responses, once the members return from convention.Wish I could help  more.

4n1 is made by Lodge. Hammered and non-hammered. There in the red book Wagner and Griswold.

Well, duh.  I've got a Lodge 4 in 1.  Don't I feel stupid now.  Isn't that the deep skillet (pot?) that has the griddle for a lid?  I don't recall mine having any markings, but I would need to check.  Maybe I have the combo cooker.  Now I will have to haul my butt out of my nice comfy chair and go look.

Any Idea of the current value?

Also I found and bought a scotch boal at the same sale. What where they designed to be used for and what is the ring used for? They look neet and at 10 dollars I could not turn it down.

Which red book are you refering to? I have two, one for Griswold And one for Wagner. I looked again and still do not find the 4 in 1.
Either I'm totally blind (a distinct possability :-X)or I need to get anoher book.

Value depends pretty much on how old it is.  The hammered pieces will bring about $50 on ebay.  Recent made stuff goes $10 to $15 for a set.  I bought a set for $30 - including shipping - for my brother.  He just wanted it for a chicken fryer.

One thing I noted is that these pieces season up into a very nice finish.  I wish Griswolds were as easy to season.

;D Thaks again for all the information I did not know they where still making  the 4 in 1. The one I have is hammered and appears to be old since it was wrapped in an old yellowed newspaper and the grease on it had time to dry to a non sticky film.

But you can't really tell from the picture. The same animal non hammered that is. I would rather have an old one. And I paid less than this for my old one at the flea market. So that is were I would try and get one.

I asked about hammered cookware at the store. I was told they were on longer producing hammered iron. Then I turn around and see hammered bacon/grill press which I bought. With all that was going on I forgot to ask about them. I'll have to check their web site to see if they are for sale on there.

I think Lodge was making the 4-in-1 pan in the 1980's or 90's but it's out of production now.  The hammered ones are the oldest I think and the nicest.

Scotch Bowls were used for stewing meats and veggies.  The rim on the bottom was so it would sit still and not roll off the stove.  After all, the bottom was rounded so it needed some feet (the rim).

Thanks again for all the input . I have been away for a few days and was suprized by all the replies when I got back.

Steve:

I understand about the round foot. I also assume the bail handle was  used to hold the bowl over an open fire or in a fire place.

What I was asking about was the small wire ring on the front of the bowl. What is it suposed to be used for? It is too small for a handle and not in a good place to be used for hanging the bowl on the wall.

Also did any one  make lids for these bowls?

Rod,
I have never seen nor heard of a cover for Scotch Bowls.  You see them on ebay sometimes with a cover but it's a marriage every time I see one.  The bail handle is to carry or move the pot.  These pots were made mostly for stovetop cooking I think though they could have been used in a fireplace.  The small ring is called a "tipping ring" and was used to tip the bowl to pour out its contents while holding the bail handle.
