Identify ERIE skillet ??
« on: October 10, 2005, 12:54:09 PM »
Hi! I'm new to the board and have been looking around quite a bit. Lots to learn, BTW.

I'm hoping that someone can help identify a skillet for me. Here's the info from the back of the pan. At the top the word E R I E At the bottom the number 7 Inbetween the number 725

It was a wooden handled skillet. The original handle has been replaced with a dowel that has a bolt through it. I haven't tried to take it apart, yet.

Two pouring spouts. Outside measurement between the spouts is 10 1/2". Pan is 2" deep.

Other than the handle problem, the pan appears to be in good shape. I'll know for sure, once I get setup to clean it. (Thanks for all the info here on cleaning CI correctly.)

Thanks, in advance, for any help you can give me on this pan.

Sounds like a pre Griswold Erie Wood handle. Can you post a picture?

It's hard to read the markings because it's in need of a cleaning.

not an easy one to find and should clean up well.  You can replace the handle with the correct handle and eye bolt with some patience and watching ebay.  I don't know much about the ERIE skillets with wood handles, but this appears to have the inside heat rim and not the outside version, but then I don't know if there are both versions with inside/outside heat rims?

Thanks for the reply. Are those handles sold separately on ebay or is it a matter of buying something in poor condition, just to get the handle?

Anyone else have any thoughts / info on this pan? So far, I haven't been able to find anything on it. Tried several searches here, with no luck.

Again, thanks for any help. Will be much appreciated.

Well Lee, I do have a suggestion. When you take another picture of the bottom, place the skillet so the person looking at it can look straight at it, as though they are looking directly into the face of a clock. To tell you the truth, I can't see the bottom of the skillet, but if I was looking straight into it with the handle at 6 o'clock I could. I believe that one is in the Griswold and Wagner Book, but can't see it good enough to know for sure. Just my suggestion. Thanks

I usually find that such a photo does not show some very important details on most skillets and that is the detial of where the handle attaches to the outside of the skillet.  I like photos taken at a high angle that will show all the underside of the handle along with where the handle attaches and some of the pouring lip detail.

Griswold made the wood handle skillets from the early 1890's into the 1930's at least.  I have a No.8 ERIE with no pattern number and wood handle.  It has the outside heat rim.  At first only sizes 7-9 were offered.   Later sizes included 2-12  (Oh, why did I sell my No.2 wood handle skillet?).  For replacement handles you have to find a donor pan that may be in poor condition except for the handle.  There are probably several sizes or lengths of handles so you would need the proper fitting one and I can't say what that would be.  ERIE wood handle skillets are uncommon so you would be wise to try to find a handle.  ERIE is not 'pre-Griswold' but is 'early Griswold'.  You might also say it is "pre-Griswold trademark".

Steve, the operative word here is "another". No single picture can show all "the very important details". However, in my opinion, of those pictures that are taken one of them should be as I have described. I don't think any serious minded potential buyer would buy any piece of cast iron without seeing a good picture of the bottom.
