Cast Iron Bread Loaf Pans?
« on: September 16, 2005, 03:44:41 PM »
I've read recently that cast iron bread loaf pans produce superior crusts on a loaf of home made bread, and that by heating the cast to say 130 degrees before putting the bread in speeds the second rise of the bread.

However, I don't see any on e-bay and can't recall having ever come across any cast iron bread loaf pans.  Any idea where I might find some?  Old or new would be OK as I want to experiment.

ALAN, didn't see a cast iron bread pan? How about the number 28 that sold for 12 thousand and 100 dollars back in the first part of the summer, now thats a bread pan. They do come up on Ebay every now and then, I've seen a few, mostly Wagner. Marty knows all about them. She's got a couple, at least.

 :)

Saw that pan on the cover of the newsletter, but alas if I had $15,000 to spend, I'd probably put it towards a new vehicle or retirement rather than a single breadpan.  I'd call whoever bought that thing seriously dedicated to the hobby.

Actually, I'm referring to the typical rectangular loaf pan style...  I heard that lodge had made some, but when I called them the other day they said they hadn't made them in a while and didn't have any plans at the moment to make any more...

Found a new Lodge bread loaf pan(4.5 X 8.5) at a country store a while back. Nothing smooth about it as is with all modern Lodge cast iron. BUT-One just like it sold for $100+ a couple of months ago on Ebay.

Alan,
The old rectangular bread pans are out there but in very small numbers.  I've only had 3 or 4 over the years and have baked bread in several but that was about 20 years ago and I don't remember how the bread compared to my sheet metal or glass pans.  I have seen only a couple on ebay.  I don't know if they never made many or they got used to death or what but they just aint out there even though I said they were.  Very small numbers of them.

3 or 4 Griswold bread pans with the side handle have sold on ebay within the past 3 months.  They usually run in the range of $250 though one brought $350.

Greg

See this auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=976&item=6197948347

Its says "Loaf Pan".  Am I incorrect in thinking this was used to make bread?  I can see where it could also be used to make meat loaf!  But of course, one would never do this in a pan for cooking bread since the meat would make bread stick to the pan.  So I guess its a matter of figuring out what the original intended use was for these pans.

I also saw the auction for a Lodge bread pan with end handles.

always thought those were for meat loaf, as they come with a lid and you wouldn't use a lid for bread. JIMO

Griswold called them a LOAF PAN (at least that's what the pan is marked) and you could use it for meat, bread, or anything else you wanted to.  I always thought of it as a bread loaf pan but you don't use a cover when making bread so it obviously had more than one intended use.

But did they all come with a cover?  Me thinks that the cover was either added later or discontinued early since we see such a large percentage of the loaf pans with no cover.  Or the cover may have been lost or discarded but that doesn't seem as likely as covers not always having been sold new with the loaf pans.

Do any catalogs show the loaf pan?  I thought I had seen it in a Griswold catalog but can't find it now.

I bake bread in a Pampered Chef stoneware pan and it is far superior to glass in my opinion.  If I can find a reasonably priced (hah!) cast iron loaf pan, I will be sure to try it.  I would think it would be wonderful for bread (or meatloaf!).

Page 137 of the Red book shows an ad for the Loaf Pan:
"The Griswold "NEVERSTICK" Loaf Pan is for oven or top stove cooking.  Cakes, bread, meat and fish loaves, baked macaroni, scalloped potatoes and all casserole dishes, French fried potatoes, etc., cooked perfectly and without sticking."

It does not mention or picture a lid.

Happy to have something to add,

Jesse

Thanks Jesse,
I probably should go back and re-read the red and blue books.  On the same page ad for the loaf pan is the divided Dinner Skillet "with it's SELF-BASTING cover".   I have always considered that the Dinner Skillet was sold with cover and this ad makes that look true.  If so, WHAT cover?  It's a high domed one but with our without writing on the top?  I am guessing with writing.

Don't know if you're still looking but here is site I found.
If you decide to get one let me know as there is a $30.00 minimum, and I am interested in getting one also.

Dwayne,

That website you gave above does not have any bread pans.  If you click the "add one to basket" buttton, on the next page you get "out of stock."
