Griswold #12 Slant/Erie with Heat Ring
« on: May 08, 2017, 12:32:25 PM »
Good day iron lovers!

So I just finished driving from Kansas City to Omaha and back, and along the way 4 new skillets found their way into my car. Two are unmarked Wagners, a 8 and a 10, one later griswold small logo to give to a friend, and the skillet of interest, a lovely #12 Griswold with the Slant/Erie logo. Some poking around leads me to believe the pan was made between 1906-1912, but what I'm really curious about is the ghost image of "griswold" above the Slant logo. Would this place it at the early end or late end of those dates? Also there is what looks like a crack across the bottom, but I think it's actually some kind of parting line. Or am I way off? Either way, I'm excited, as I've never found such a big one in an antiques store. Lastly, what would you value it at? I paid 125, knowing it was a fairly old and rare pan, but see them on eBay now for 3-400. Thanks, and hope to meet some of you in Pennsylvania this September.

Welcome to the Forum Jack.

Page 12 of the blue book dates your #12 Slant Erie circa 1906-1912 (as you noted) and values one in mint condition at $150-$200.  The book was printed in 2010 so those values may be off.  IMO your best bet for determining value is to check SOLD eBay listings for the same skillet.

I am guessing the ghost mark (from the placement of it) probably says Griswold's Erie.  That trademark was used 1905-1906.  Those are shown on the same page of the blue book.

Be sure to join WAGS if you would like to attend the convention in September:

Welcome to the WAGS forum, Jack.  I'm inclined to agree to with Sandy that the Blue Book values are dated and that the e-bay completed listings is the best way to determine value.  Keep in mind that the $300-$400 range sales are for skillets in pristine condition.  Your #12 looks to be in good to very good condition.

You've also got a ghost "12" at the bottom (6:00 position,) and a ghost "719" p/n in the bottom arm of the Griswold cross.  Those are also leftover ghost marks from the "Griswold's ERIE" patterns that were doctored to make this skillet.

If the inside looks good, then that was a nice buy.

Oh, and that diagonal crack-like mark running across the bottom is also pretty common to bigger skillets from this time period, I'd say.  I don't know what to call it, except just generally to say it's a casting mark, but I'm guessing it was probably also due to pattern wear.

I agree with Adam, those are not cracks, but casting imperfections which were quite common back then.

Darn... you caught me messin' over the new guy.  Drats!

Seriously, Jack wasn't a WAGS member when I responded to his post.  His profile was changed when he joined and the system automatically changed his old post(s) from visitor to member.  Clear as mud, huh?

And yes, he's good to go to the convention.
