Griswold French waffle iron
« on: August 19, 2016, 10:20:11 AM »
I'm very new in collecting cast iron skillets. Trying to get all the info I can. Found this in an old barn a couple months ago. It started the fever. It has three double waffle irons with wooden handles and a base. They have a star on each with French waffle, patd June 29 1880,griswold mfc co, and Erie pa on the waffle irons. Found the three pieces first and couple days later found base. Any info will be appreciated I can't find much on it. Will try to attach picture.

Hello Chad. I can't see what the inside of the paddles look like, you know, the pattern they make the waffle iron into, that. Could you please post a pic so I can see it?  :)

So far I can tell you that you have a number eight Griswold French Waffle iron with button hinges. And they were made in sizes 7,8, and 9, two paddle, three paddle and four paddle.

That is excellent, Chad.  You don't see those very often.  In fact, I have never seen one. 8-)

PSSSSSST, Jim, be quite, don't let him hear you. I am gonna try to do him out of this piece. He don't know what he's got. So I'm gonna offer him as much as ten or fifteen dollars and this little jewel will be mine, MINE, MINE, ALL MINE. Now don't tell nobody. You know how stuff gets spread around and all.  :-X :-X

Hello perry. Yes I know what your talking about I think. On the inside. I'll take a picture and post it soon as I get home. Haha I liked the last message. Thank you Jim I'll take that as a good sign. That may be why I've not found any on sites or google image. But I'll add a few more pics real quick.

Here are a few more pictures. Trying to show the functions of paddles and the hinges. The paddles swivel inside the base. Maybe you can read the writing. That is the first time I tried seasoning anything.

And one more question if u don't mind. With mr. Jim saying you don't see those every day and he's never seen one. Was there just not a lot made like that or many didn't survive? Sorry to throw so much out there. I'm just glad to get some information. It's worth a lot to me even if the value isn't much. It just really caught my eye when I found it.

Hello Chad. If that piece is not cracked or pitted anywhere its got a lot going for it. Its circa 1880 to 1890, in that area. And I wanted to see the inside of the paddles to see which pattern it is. The pattern is the one that is least common. And it is in books Chad, you're just looking in the wrong books. Check it over real close and see if it has any cracks in the base or any cracks in the hinges. And if it does not have any cracks or pitting, how much do you think its worth Chad?  :-/

I just wanna hear your opinion, based on what you know or don't know.

Also the wooden handles are not correct. It had much shorter wooden handles. IMO the wooden handles, whether they are there or not there, makes no difference in value.

Hey Perry Rapier. Glad to hear back from you. MAN! That is really old. I knew the pat'd date was, but figured it lasted quite a few years. But I read your last post and I've spent the last 15 minutes or so looking it over the best I can. As far as the paddles... One has two small spots on the inside of the handle just about the size of a BB maybe. No bigger. Both spots were two single BB sized pits I think is what they are. And one small group on the inside of a paddle in the middle of design you were wanting to look at. Still not much bigger than a BB. None of which are much deeper than the surface. The base has sort of a rough feel to it but nothing much deeper than the surface. The worst part is my seasoning job I put on it. No cracks at all tho. Not one. I thought there was but somehow a few bristles from my brush got on it when rubbing the crisco on it. But I must have been looking in the wrong places. I kept reading about the blue book so I ordered one last week, but couldn't wait. The hinges look good also. Everything works just fine as far as the mechanics of it. But as far as my guess on value... I honestly don't know a lot about value of cast iron pieces. It was the first thing I found when I started collecting antiques and that was a little over a month ago. So I'm learning every time I get on this site. But when I saw it I knew there was something to it. It just looked like it was an important piece. I found the paddles first and looked them up and saw a waffle iron with two paddles on google image. So I went back looking for it. Found it and put it together. And that started the fever. I knew enough to save it but that's about it. But I will say. I've been getting more and more excited reading the post. But I'll shoot for the moon and say between 300-450?  That's going off the name and age. And the fact  I've been very partial to it.  Am I close? Sorry for the long post.

I think either way no matter the value it deserves a better cleaning job. Now that I've cleaned and seasoned a few a read how on this site I'm gonna do it right. Even if it's only worth the 15 or twenty you were gonna offer me. Haha.

Hello Chad. If I were you I would take them sticks (handles) and pitch them because they add nothing to it IMO. As far as value. I think a low of seven hundred dollars and nine hundred to a thousand, maybe more, for the top end. The price of iron was down for because of the recession but now its bouncing back up. And a piece like this will always bring good money. So you did very well. I don't know where you got it at for sure, but I'd go back and see if I missed anything. So congratulations on a beautiful piece. And some more advice. When you get the BB use it as a guide and reference. Everything there is not etched in stone.

That is a lot more than I ever would have thought. I will pitch the handles tho. I haven't liked them from day one. Now knowing that I will. But thank you for all the info on it. I really appreciate it. That's crazy to me it's worth that much. Gets me excited.  But I found several more things there I got a lot of cast iron skillets and pots and a few kettles. But anyway thanks again for the value and advice.

A very nice piece, Chad. I too am new at this cast iron collecting. I got excited with a rusty 3 burner Griswold I got at an auction locally for a couple a dollars. That got me to looking more closely at some CI that  are family hand-me-downs.
This is fun stuff!!

Hello Stephen. Yes the rest of us think it is pretty fun stuff too. Most folks like hunting it most of all. Its like fishing, you would rather catch them than clean them.  ;D

. Thank you very much Stephen. I bet that's a nice piece you have also. It is really fun and  It has me doing the same thing. I'm now going thru all the house places in my family. That came out of a family barn. It's very addictive looking at all the markings, and wanting to go thru just one more box. Ha.

Thanks a lot Mr. Greg. I am watching out the window for my blue book to get here, so maybe I can find out more about the pattern. But I have noticed since I found it that my kitchen is being filled with CI so the barn may be a good idea. Ha. Mr. Perry got me excited, so I went back and cleaned it up better so everything would shine more. Thanks.
