Lodge #16 Dutch Oven
« on: July 01, 2016, 09:23:05 AM »
Found a brand new Lodge #16 DO sitting on a shelf at a store nearby.  I have heard these are hard, if not impossible to find.  Is it worth the $158 they are asking  for it?

Well, since they have been discontinued (and have been for a few years I believe), if you want it, buy it.

I have a couple 14" deep ovens I love, but I can't imagine trying to fill a 16" oven. The 14" ovens take a lot of charcoal, and the 16" ones would be worse.

In my opinion, absolutely. That is in fact, the retail price for that oven based on new stock on the shelf. I've seen them sell for twice that now in online auctions. It's one of my favorite sizes to cook in when I have more than a handful of hungry folks around. In fact if you didn't want it and it was in Texas, tell me and I'll go get it.  :D

You never know, sometimes even a Lodge 16 is not enough, they are dwarfed next to my MACA 12x16x9.  Here are 9 ovens being used with two 8s on the right just in case we need them.  Didn't have room in the car to haul more than what you see.
If that 16 was close to me I would be all over it too.

I grabbed it.  It even rang up for less that the price listed on the shelf ($152)!! I also have two MACA's one 17" Round and a 13" round.  The 17 is so heavy and a pain in the backside to season.  I have to redo the seasoning because it has gone rancid.  Really not looking forward to that job again. Thanks for the replies.  I think it is going to be great piece of Cast Iron!

That 16 is just right to do two racks of baby back ribs, should the mood strike you.  :D :D

Good find Neil, nice pics Tom.  Are you making it to Grand Rapids this year?  I think we had 5-16's along with the 14's, 12's and 10's going in Chattanooga last fall at the Convention to feed about 70.
