Unusually large shallow pan
« on: May 13, 2016, 01:46:17 PM »
This is a large pan. It weighs more than 29 pounds. I am cleaning it for a man who wants to use it for cooking fish on a grill.

Is it cookware? It looks and feels like it was built for some other industrial purpose.

Thanks for your thoughts!

What are the dimensions?
It looks rather thick. I'm leaning towards the some other industrial purpose use.

Had to winch the thing out of the electro to measure it...  (j/k, no winch actually involved :-))

Rough measurements: 24"x16"x2".

More exact measurements:  is 24 1/4" long including the handles x 15 3/4" wide by 1 3/4" deep (interior depth). The short sides are about 3/8" thick. The long sides are about 1/2" thick. I'd say the bottom must be at least 1/2" thick but did not measure it.

I've no idea what it's used for, but I highly doubt it's a cooking utensil just judging from the size and heft.

I wouldn't use it to cook food... I'm leaning toward an industrial casting.  JMO

Sandy,

Thanks for your insight. What are the dangers of using it for cooking? Lead maybe... I could test it for lead. Anything else?

It is cleaning up nicely.

Lewis, I honestly don't know.  That's murky territory that I've never explored.  That was JMO and I could be dead wrong, but I'd still rather err on the side of caution.

I agree with Sandy on this one due to the weight and size of it.  I don't think it is cookware.  As far as using it for that purpose I would sure test for lead although it doesn't look like it was used for that.  Not sure what else would be of concern.  Maybe others will know more about it.

The only thing that I can even remotely think this thing could be used for, MAYBE, would be something to fix donuts in. Its got plenty room. Its gonna hold heat. You got easy access in and out with your product. Those are my thoughts. But who knows.  :-/

Perry... now I want a doughnut. I hope you are right.

It took a while but I order-received-and-ran the lead test. It did not indicate lead. The big pan would barely, and I mean barely, fit inside our oven. I ended up seasoning it right side up. The bottom side picked up some unattractive markings from oil that was on the oven rack, but otherwise it turned out nicely.  It's headed back to its owner this week.

Nice cleaning job, Lewis.  You're right, it would be a shame not to cook with it.  It's the ultimate sizzling steak platter.  And think how many pigs in blankets you could make in it :o
