New in box! Never Used!
« on: March 25, 2015, 02:44:25 PM »
Picked this up yesterday, would guess it is post 1957 due to the lack of a cast emblem?. Whats it worth? should I use it or sell it?

Ok I I wasn't sure if it was a common piece that everyone had.

Travis, could you look on the bottom of the box and see what the printing talking about the maker has in it.  Usually at the bottom of the logo there is a number, that tells you the year the box was made.  Just some interesting information.

Here's an example, it was made by the St. Joe Paper Company in 1961.  See the number at the bottom of the circle?

I looked on the bottom of the box but there is no clue as to its production date...

So if I were to sell it what should I be asking?

As far as 'Griswold' Camp Ovens go this one is not worth as much money when compated to other pieces. Also, this box is not right for this piece. I'm not saying the piece did not come in the box. What I'm saying is if you look at the box its got number 310 on it. Yet that number 310 is not marked on the piece itself. The true Griswold Camp Ovens of this size were made in Erie, PA and they had the number 180 on them. And Wagner took those patterns and modified them. Wagner took off the Erie, PA USA and in some of them, like this one here, they didn't even say Wagner on them. I think the one that Wagner made first was the one that had the big Griswold emblem on it. I have several pictures showing the bottom and what I am talking about here. Here is a box that I got with one of these.

Here are some pictures that show how these looked when they were made in Erie by Griswold and there are some that show what they looked like after Wagner modified. I talked about at Erie they were number 180, and then Wagner changed it to 310, you will see that as well. Also there is a number 179 which was Griswolds pattern number for the number nine camp oven. In my opinion, Wagner dropped all the sizes except the size ten for the camp oven. When Griswold made them in Erie they were made in sizes 8,9,10,11,12, and 13. And again, IMO Wagner dropped them all except the size ten. I say that because I have never seen one. Has anybody else? Here are the pics. Sorry Cheryl.  :-[

Last one. Also there is a label in this one when Wagner was owned by Randall. I got those pictures from ebay there were several more with it as well.

Hello Travis. Well. It has some things going for it, and is lacking other things that it could have going for it. With that said, with what you got there. I think its easily worth two one hundred dollar bills. If your piece was by itself and nothing else and used and needed cleaned, I'd say a hundred and twenty five dollars or so would be more like it.

Thanks! I am more of a user than a collector, I wish it was used so then I could use it haha. But i would feel bad (being the youngin' that I am) if I were the first one to use it.

Yes I see exactly what you mean. I'd feel the same way. Why don't you trade it to somebody, who will keep it as it is, in unused condition, for a nice user Dutch Oven. But I'm like you, it would be a shame to start using that piece. Good luck with what you do. I like to see things preserved. We are stewards of what we own. Somebody owned it before us and somebody will own it after us. As I collector I try to preserve as much as I can for those who will hopefully follow.  :)

I also agree with Travis and Perry.  I enjoy cooking with my cast iron and I would be very reluctant to cook with it.

I'm a little late to the party here but why not trade with someone who would have a user and would want a keeper. Then everyone is happy. If there is a price difference the "keeper" could throw in some extras? Just a though, I know unless your close shipping could be an issue.
