Griswold griddle and Wagner waffle iron help please?
« on: October 20, 2014, 12:02:03 AM »
I would appreciate some of your expertise to help a newbie out.

Picked up an old Wagner waffle iron today, it's marked with Wagner MFG CO Sidney O, patent date July 26, 1892. I've seen similar online, just not this one. Any ideas on the value? It's complete, in good shape (cleanable), wooden handles are in decent shape and the base is bailed.

Griswold griddle, nice flat bottom, no warpage, just rust.

Number 9 on the handle

Thanks for looking  :)

Hi Robert, hopefully Mike Bohannon will see this as he knows lots about the old Wagner waffle irons.  The Blue Book shows a value of $50 for that, and $30-40 for the Griswold #9 handle griddle although without doing an ebay search, I'd guess they're fetching more than that.

Robert, is the base missing on the waffle iron, or did you just not take a picture of it?

Thanks for posting the extra pic Robert. Restoring waffle irons with wooden handles can get tricky if they are not readily removable. The base looks like it will clean up fine. Posting a photo after it's cleaned up might get you a better discussion of value. It's hard to tell if the surface rust on the paddles will leave any pitting once cleaned.

The handles are removable, they actually unscrew from the plates. I'll throw it in the electrolysis tank in the next couple of days and see how it cleans up. Shouldn't take too long as it's not overly crudded up.

Don't know C.B. but with all those silly letters including over the logo, probably not much.  Might be lucky to get Blue Book for it ;) ;)

Well Randy in this case the blue book doesn't have it listed since it's one of a kind. I wonder how many new members know what this is? I guess it's just another piece of old cast iron.

Definitely an interesting piece CB, would be curious to know what it would be worth as well.

I think both of these pieces are going to end up in a friends charity auction in the next couple of weeks along with a couple of other pieces. I really don't have any use for them, bought them on the spur of the moment. If they get over $100, i'll be happy.

CB.. in my book, your griddle is one of a kind... Priceless.

Robert, regarding your 1892 Wagner WI.

The 1892 is an older Wagner WI....

The #8 is the most common size.

I picked up a #7 and a #9 (1892) in fully restored condition a few weeks ago for $30 and $45.

The # 8's  I have in the past (2 years) paid $5 - $15 for... unrestored.

Double that amount for todays wildly fluctuating market values.

JMO...  :)

Thanks Cheryl. I was thinking about asking 20 or 25 for it.

JMO is valuable in this case Cheryl, thanks... If my items catch a couple of hundred at a charity auction, i'll be happy.

The griswold is in the electro tank and is cleaning up VERY nicely. It's got a true flat bottom and is near done. The waffle iron is next.

Thanks.

It's as clean as it's going to be... Going to post from photobucket for the better quality. Not perfect by any means, some pitting on the back of the plates, one of the handles has a small crack in it. It's not seasoned, I rubbed in a thin layer of grapeseed oil to keep the rust at bay.

Hello Robert.  You sure did a nice job cleaning that. Very nice in fact. I would not have thought that it would come out that nice. I'm impressed. :)
