After a long time away from cast iron hunting, I decided to stop at an estate sale with the wife. It was after noon and I figured that if there was any iron left, it would be over-priced, damaged or just plain junk iron.
Imagine my surprise when I see a large skillet being used to hold pens, pencils and other desk-drawer detritus. Quickly I grabbed for it while silently hoping it was anything other than a new Lodge.
Upon examination, it was a SL Griswold #12. So I quickly put on my poker face and grabbed an old flashlight I had noticed next to it and walked over to the ladies running the sale. "How much for this old flashlight and skillet?" I asked.
"One fifty" she replied.
My heart sunk at the news. However, not wanting to give up so easily, I mustered up the response of "would you consider any less?... to which she replied "since your wife has already set aside a big box of Christmas stuff, I'll let you have it for one instead."
It was about then that I realized she had meant a $1.50, not $150.00 for the flashlight and skillet.
Afterwards, I would have felt bad for getting it so cheap, but my wife bought about $50 worth of stuff as well.
Not sure what small logo Griswold #12's are going for these days, but I think I did ok my first day back out.
