Griswold #14
« on: May 12, 2014, 05:17:47 PM »
I have an opportunity to buy a Griz #14 skillet for $100 and am thinking that I will go get it. Am not certain which Griz is (not great pictures) but from the picture it looks like an LB with heat ring. Looks to be in extremely good condition. Is the price a good one?

Thanks for the re[ly Kieth. It is located about 100 miles from me, so I want to ask the seller some questions before I drive that far to look at it. The pics aren't very good, so Naturally I want more information.

I just learned that this skillet has a "slight"wobble and of course that makes a difference. I think I will still drive to the sellers location to see it myself. Seller says it is very slight downward bow, but since I am not going to be flipping the skillet that won't make a lot of difference. I do think that the price is close to right even with a slight wobble. anyone else have an opinion on value? Thanks.

Unless it has a really bad problem I would buy every #14 Griswold for 100.00 I could buy. The 12 small logos are bringing over 100 on eBay right now. I would say small, heck yes it is worth 100. (Unless of course your car gets 2 miles to the gallon)

I picked up the #14 today, and it is sure pretty. as advertised it does have a small bit of wobble though. I would say the wobble of around 1/16 inch is at the 12 o'clock position only, otherwise it sits very flat. It is an LB with HR and as far as I can see it has been used very infrequently. There is no sign of wear on the bottom,m and the cooking area appears to have been seasoned by someone who didn't know how to do it properly. the cooking area is sticky, and there is a portion of the inside that has a whitish area that is not holding any oil at all. I would not be surprised to find the original foundry grind marks when I remove the present seasoning. Wondering if I might just put it through the SCO method to see if it even needs to go through the lye bath. Thoughts?

IMO the wobble you mention here is nothing. There is no such thing as a perfect piece of cast iron. Sounds like you have a nice piece and a bargain too. Congratulations.
