W.C. Davis 11 Inch Camp Skillet with Lid
« on: February 10, 2014, 11:31:55 AM »
I have been looking at a Civil War era skillet and lid that is for sale at my local Antique Barn.

Was wondering how much this is worth.

It is a W.C. Davis & Co with Nov 1863 Patent date.  Since W.C. Davis changed their name just prior to the end of the Civil War, this puts this skillet definitely in the 1863 to 1865 time frame.

It has three legs on the bottom that are in perfect shape.

The only issue I have is that the lip of the lid doesn't fit all the way into the skillet.

That's a nice lid. If it doesnt fit the pan right its probably a mis-match.  I'd give $40 or so just for the lid if it is in good shape, but thats just me.

That is the part that sucks.

It is definitely a W.C. Davis 11 skillet.  Maybe just a different model from the same timeframe.  The lettering "11 INCH" on the skillet handle match perfectly to the lettering "11 INCH" on the lid.  They want $65 for the set.

May look at it again next time I am there and decide if I want to really get into "collecting" cast iron, or if I what I am doing is simply building a complete set of cast iron skillets and other cookware that I will use on a regular basis.

So far I have my cooking set of Griswold skillets from #3 to #10 and a flat bottom kettle.

The rest of my cast iron is Wagner Ware that I got to fill in the missing pieces until I could find the Griswolds.

My Lodge is limited to a griddle I used to cook with, and a couple of free gift skillets.

If it isn't cracked, I would pay that for it ;)

Roger,

If the piece makes you feel warm and fuzzy,  I'd say  get it.  You most likely find the pieces for your collection in time,  but not  everyone is going to have  a piece this old with this much history. :)

This lovely piece should be arriving back home in Ohio by Friday.

Got a PM from a member, and arranged to purchase it and ship it for him.

A nice piece of history salvaged from becoming someone's old piece of junk to be left rusting in a garage after the discover that it isn't what they want for thier camping kit.

If I run into any additional rare/odd pieces that don't fit my needs/wants, I will post pictures and see if anyone else here wants them.
