Found this at a local auction, dont know much of anything about enameled griswold so is this a nice piece? Have not actually held it yet so I dont know about the inside of if it has a lid.

Anthony, if the inside is as good as the outside, yes, its a very nice piece, it looks like a dutch oven, I don't believe you say. Porcelain pieces are very unforgiving when it comes to condition, some knicks will, and do, greatly decrease the value. But when you get a nice piece, with no knicks, they do bring quite a bit more money.

Judging from the bottom it does not seem to have been used much. The green ditch ovens don't show up often. If the cover looks as good as the dutch oven I'd bid on it.. The inside should be black iron...

I saw a few enameled ovens in the r.b. that had glass lids, do they come with iron also?

Anthony I believe that if the dutch oven is black iron on the inside it should have a cast iron fully marked cover.  If it is coated on the inside as well it should have a class lid.  There could be some exceptions to this and I hope someone will list them here so I know!!

I would say that variation of porcelain Gris has matching green cover.. Look at the blue one in the BB p. 194. The porcelian variations with cream/white interiors have glass covers... To best of my knowledge..

I was looking at that too Jeff. It does not appear to have one, and from what I can see of the ear, it does not show signs of ever having one..  Could be Gris tried a few without it, they did a few odd things here and there..

Ed you're right as the dutch oven appears to be perfect where the bail would attach.  Will thanks for the info!  I wold have never guess they let these go with no bail handles.

I don't know if this applies to the piece in question, but I imagine it would, but you could order dutch ovens with or without bails, so whether this one has a bail or not is meaningless, yes?

I would say yes, as long as it appears the bail was never on the piece. If the porcelain was worn on the ears where a bail would have been, that would make a difference. To me anyways..  Some of the D/Os with no bail have loop handle, with no center support for a bail..  The hinged D/Os have no bail, same with the hammered D/Os which are also hinged.
It may be the angle of the pic, but this looks like maybe a deep D/O???
