Black dutch oven with a star stamp???
« on: January 11, 2007, 01:51:57 AM »
Hello,

I have this black dutch oven or kettle that measures 10" diameter and 6.5" deep.

It was my fathers for many years.

The only markings are the two stars that have been stamped in the metal.  One under the lid in the center and the other on the bottom of the pot.

Does anyone know the maker of this pot?  And maybe the value?
Thanks for all your help,
R

I've seen plenty of these around but don't know the maker.  Anyone?  Value would probably be in the $20 to 40 range for someone who wanted one.

Is this the one that is on ebay right now? Just wondering. I have been curious about this one for a long time and I have seen a lot of these covers( I own one of these covers myself) but I have never seen the base. I'm sorry I can't tell you who made it because I don't know. It might be one of those that no one ever finds out about. Thanks for showing it, at least we know what the base looks like now.

No this is not on Ebay....   ... yet.

I may post it for sale, havn't decided yet.

I wish somebody knew who the maker of this "star" brand is.  I'm glad that you all have seen others with the stamp.

I found these with some other iron cookware and that lid actually fit a couple of skillets too but when I saw the star on the bottom of the kettle too I knew they went together.

Thanks again for all the comments...

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this pot yet?

I am having a yard sell today and was thinking about putting it in the sale but don't know how much I should price it at.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Rich

I think Steve was accurate with his estimate of $20-40.  I too have seen these before, but don't know who made them.  They are not highly collected.

There are few ways to identify unmarked iron cookware.  You either have to match the piece up with distinct features shown in a catalog or on another piece from the same maker that IS marked or know someone who bought the piece and can attest to the maker.   Few catalogs show the details we need to identify and many (most?) of the early catalogs used illustrations instead of actual photographs.  I've had little luck in identification over the years.  These pieces have lost their birth certificates.

So do all the pieces like this have the star or is it a molders mark?

If a molders or pattern maker's mark this mark would have to be a pattern maker's mark since it's incised.  A molder will make his mark by stamping the mark into the sand mold and that would give a raised mark.  This pot is a flat bottom kettle I'm pretty sure and I don't know the age.  It's not VERY old but could be earlier 20th century.
