is this one salvageable?
« on: August 28, 2017, 07:56:29 PM »
Picked up this wagner Flat bottom Kettle and the three leg stand last weekend at a garage sale. Appears that it had been used as a planter. The inside is very heavily pitted/corroded. I lye bathed and then gave it  a day in the E-bath, didn't really do anything for the interior surface. My novice question, can anything be done to return the interior surface to a more uniform smoothness? have read up on vinegar bath, but wanted some advice and direction before starting out.

IMO there is no hope for this piece. You could get the inside looking half way decent IF you wanted to sand it down. But that's the only way you are gonna get rid of that serious pitting. You could buy you a nice one of these for thirty dollars or so. But you would have to put a lot of labor into getting this one in halfway decent shape and it would not be worth the effort. Hope that helps.

Thks Perry, just wanted to get an experienced opinion, I've havent come up against that much corrosion before. Will use it to heat the camp dishwater over the fire and call it good!

Im only into it for $10, so feelin good.

Give you your money back for the stand alone. Send it to me! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Problem with the pitting is the clean up after using. I have used some that rough in "camp" in the past

Yeah Duke, I liked the unit regardless of the shape it was in, I will hold onto it for awhile, let you know first if I put the stand on the market..,. been eyeing a nice ol willys wagon for restoration, so may sell off some of my other iron!
