"Backwards" e-tank for teapot
« on: August 23, 2017, 08:53:34 AM »
I've heard of folks doing this, but I'd never tried it. Looks like it is working.

The inside of this teapot was pretty dang rusty. I left it in my Metal Rescue solution for 12 hours. It did a good job on the outside (still more work to be done), but the inside was still pretty bad, so I figured I needed to try something different. Fingers crossed!

Hello Spurgeon. Its not exactly clear to me what you are in fact doing. Now I will grant you that it looks nice and the colors are good. But what you are doing and how you are doing it escapes me. I do see you are cleaning the inside of the teapot, somehow. :-/

He is doing 'reverse' electrolysis.

Positive anode is on the inside, and the teapot itself is the Negative.

Just need to be careful that the interior anode is suspended and not touching anywhere on the Tea Kettle, or it will be curtains for the battery charger.. ;) ;)

Now I know what to do with my collection of nicked and chipped lawn mower blades!

My wife calls me a hoarder.

"Why don't you throw that away?"

"I might find a use for it some day."

"That's ridiculous."

I win.  ;D

BTw - I forgot to take a "before" picture of the inside. It cleaned up beautifully.

I'll add that you can use this technique for other items, like Dutch ovens.  But, you should have the piece being cleaned fully submerged in electrolyte.  If you don't, there is a risk that a water line will form on the piece.  That might not be a big deal on a tea kettle, but it would be unsightly on a DO.
Hold still rabbit so I can dunk you in this bucket of lye!
