I use 1 tablespoon per gallon. Almost always get a white film on the first one or 2 pieces, but seems to go away. I always thought it was non-disolved soda.  My amp guage never reads more than 4 or 5 amps, and have never had a reason to add more soda to try and get the amps to read 20. My feeling is if it's bubbling, it's working. I also get the green slime if I leave it in. My water is hard, and rusty. After a dozen or so pieces, the water turns green, so I discard and start over.

I haven't seen anymore green goo.  I have also changed a few things around.    Got rid of all copper wire, bolted plates to sheet metal, clamped piece getting cleaned, and I "wash" the plates occasionally.   Oh yeah, and I never leave a piece in with power off.   Now I am consistently running right around 20A and I am getting pieces cleaned and seasonable in about 24 hours.

So I too have battled the green goo...I can't figure out what causes it.. I took a #7 griswold skillet out and put a wagner square skillet in...Both lye bathed prior..Didn't change anything..Just the piece being cleaned..The #7 came out like it should have..All the red rust was now black and powdery and wiped right off...I checked on the wagner and it was covered in green spots..Luckily I caught it before it got too bad..NOTHING about my set up changed..Just the piece being cleaned..I put in a no name #3 and let it in there..same thing..started gettin covered in green spots...I can't figure it out..I did notice that I have fizz coming off my piece being cleaned AND my anodes(stainless steel sheets)...I never seen that before...It's almost like they are both being cleanded...I know I don't have a short or arc anywhere and all of my connections are directly bolted...It gets frustrating..I go MONTHS without an issue and all of a sudden it starts..

The Connections/connectors are critical.
That is the one variable that can change over time.

I keep a jar of 100% vinegar next to the electro and regularly dump my nuts, bolts and washers (ss) in it to clean off build up and gunk.

Also clean my clamps regularly.  Steel C clamps go into a container of Evapo at least annually or more frequently depending on use.
