Lye Bath - My Set Up
« on: July 17, 2016, 10:08:42 AM »
Simple Lye bath setup.  Hopefully it works as planned.  I bought a 32 gallon Rubbermaid Brute trash can, picked some pieces of carbon steel out of the scrap pile at work, and used a couple of o-rings.

First I laid out the bars across the top to see where I wanted them to be.

Once I determined that, my OCD self measured out from the handle and down from the lip and marked the holes.

Next step was to drill the pilot holes.

Next, I drilled the holes out to 1/2"  this is slightly smaller than the diameter of the bars.  This is so the bars stay snug and 1. won't slide in and out, 2. won't let anything into the holes.

After the holes are drilled, I slid the bars into place.

Next up, slide the o-rings over the end of the bars to make sure they don't slide around on you.

Now, I just need to make a small brick platform for it to sit on, fill er up, locate some wire hangers, and put my pieces in.   8-)

ETA: I drilled a couple holes in the side of the lid so I could put some cable ties on it to keep someone from accidentally getting into it.  It is all filled up now and I will be placing some pans in there tonight.  I can't wait.

Getting pieces ready to go in.
All loaded up.  Every one of those pieces fit in there.

Where do you find that?  I couldn't find anything today.  We don't have a single wire coat hanger in our house.  I ended up finding some cheap steel wire at the dollar store to get by.

Tommy,

Plain, old coat hangers work well.  Make your hooks so they lock closed and the pan cannot fall off.  I sometimes hang 3 or 4 skillets from each hook.

Yeah Jeff, I wanted to use the coat hangers.  We have zero of them in out house.  I called my buddy.  They had zero.  We went to several different stores.  Nobody still sells plain wire coat hangers.  I have not checked Walmart yet though.

Cheryl,  thank you.

Where I used to work, the company provided the technicians with uniforms.  The laundry service had a rack where the steel hangers were placed to be picked up.  These were really good, heavy gauge wire hangers, so I took advantage of the nearly endless supply.  You might ask folks you know that work in a shop, factory, car dealership service area, etc. to see what they can come up with.  Maybe even go to a dry cleaner to see if they'd let a few go.  Dry cleaners have really stout wire hangers for drapes and other heavy items.

Home Depot also sells galvanized steel wire in 9 gauge (Store SKU # 196248) and 12-gauge (Store SKU # 197502).

I picked up my new griddle tonight so I took the chance to peak at the progress so far when I put it in there.   Holy cow, this stuff works fast.   :)  way better than the easy-off and trash bag method.   I will be seasoning a handful of pans tomorrow evening. :)

I pulled every single piece, hosed it off and put it back. Lol.  I then topped the trivet to the bottom.  Hmmm....  gonna make a diggin hook at work tomorrow to try and retrieve  it.  Lol
