Dawn Power Dissolver - It's Official
« on: March 16, 2015, 05:11:54 PM »

I have just received communication from Proctor & Gamble,

and it's official...

Dawn Power Dissolver HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED....... :'( :'( :'(

I have suggested that they do limited production runs once a year.

They seem to be seeking input.

I just saw a commercial for something called Dawn Platinum Power Clean. Is that something new? Maybe their replacement?

Mark, it's not new and it's not a replacement. It's a slightly more powerful dish liquid. Supposed to cut soaking time from overnight to 3 minutes. It does work pretty well, but I wouldn't say it's that good.

P&G recommended that I try Dawn Platinum Erasing Dish Foam, but I have never been impressed with their 'foam' products.

5 minutes ago, UPS delivered another 'case' of 32 oz. bottles of Dawn Power Dissolver (professional).

So I am stockpiled, for awhile. And will be rationing......

 ;D

Hello Cheryl. Now please tell me why I should be using Dawn Power Disolver, professional or otherwise? I have just always used plain ole ragler Dawn. Of all the times that I have read of people using it I have never tried it.  :-/

Perry, the DPD is a tool in the arsenal.  It is great (fantastic actually) on Aluminum, and many other types of materials.

For example, the picture below is of a Deep Fry Basket that I got about 10 days ago...

It was so disgusting,,,, nooks and crannies caked with layers of grease and bits of old breading/coatings.  Probably about 40-50 years worth, not to mention the dog hair...

Rinsed with super hot water, and sprayed with Dawn Power Dissolver, super hot water rinse and wipe over with sponge.
Sprayed a second time, minimal scrubbing...

And this is what it looks like now........
(no before picture...ugh... couldn't even stand to take a pic of the mess)

My other Deep Fry basket (center) got the same treatment... it came with the Wagner Deep Fryer and appears to be original.

So pic below...

Far Left is New Never used, a bit lighter weight than the other two...  center is the Basket that came with the Wagner Deep Fryer, right is the recently acquired old one... it is a bit taller, but fits the fryers also.......

The Dawn Power Dissolver also works well on getting the crud off of Porcelain coated cookware (although I had a Prizer ware finish that clouded a bit... just can't leave it on long...), and my glass casserole dishes that get that brown grease build up... gone... there are a 101 uses, including B B Que grills...

So... hopefully they will make more in the future, for now, I am good with my stockpile...  ;D

Cheryl do you suppose they got anymore of DPD like you got. I like a bargain too. If need be I'll take a case as well. You can IM me if you want. Thank you.  :)

Cheryl, can you tell by the label what might be in it that makes it work so well? Maybe you could make something similar at home?

The MSDS says it contains solvents and sodium hydroxide.
Hold still rabbit so I can dunk you in this bucket of lye!

Mark, I've posted this here before. A do it yourself recipe for DPD.

The MSDS says it contains solvents and sodium hydroxide.

I don't think so.

The only listing of Sodium Hydroxide is listed as an example of how to treat it during transport. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19397764/Dawn_Power_Dissolver_MSDS.pdf Not as an ingredient.

Interestingly enough if you look at the main ingredients they seem to be very close to Easy-Off Fume free oven cleaner. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19397764/US%20-%20EASY-OFF%20Fume%20Free%20Max%20Oven%20Cleaner%20Aerosol%20-%20English%20%28May%202013%29.pdf

Both seem to use monoethanolamine and diethylene glycol n-butyl ether. SO is Easy-Off kinda just like Dawn Power in a different container?

And I wonder, my wife bought easy-off for me to try the oven cleaner in the bag method, but I wanted a simple lye oven cleaner. (either sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide) Is this close to the same? I'm wondering if this is still ok for long term soaking. I'm not in deep enough yet to make a lye bath. Soon maybe.

I finally have a skillet worth trying it on but it's a good enough one that I don't want to hurt it sitting in a bag for days.

Scott, this is true.. not all oven cleaner is the same. :)

Easy off Yellow Cap contains sodium hydroxide... (please don't tell me they've changed their packaging, as mfgs.  are driving me bonkers with changes lately..)

Some folks do use Potassium Hydroxide instead of Sodium Hydroxide for their 'lye' baths.  Should yield the same results.

I never bothered reading the MSDS for DPD... I just knew it worked and was recommended for aluminum.  Followed the directions on bottle, and figured if it damaged my aluminum I'd just call my attorney.. LOL   ;) ;) ;)

Thanks Cheryl, I'll have to go get a yellow cap, mine is blue. I'm learning. I do think the blue cap seems very similar to dpd though, may be a substitute for those looking.
