Ok, here's my dillema... I just bought a No10 Savery & Co kettle. This thing is huge! On the SLIM chance that it will fit in my electro cooker, how would I suspend it? What if it won't fit? Any suggestions on cleaning such a large piece?

Oh hell! One clean, how am I supposed to SEASON it??? It certainly won't fit in my oven.

Sure is a beautiful piece...but, now I"m very confused about how to deal with it. LOL! Ya think I would have thought about all this before I bought it <snicker>

If it will fit your electro, suspend it from a 2x4 tri-pod or set everything under a ceiling joist in the garage. Maybe a extra large plastic yard bag and several cans of oven off.
As for seasoning, how about the the way it was probably orginally done, set or suspended over an open fire.  ( or a 2 burner gas hot plate )

Hey Michelle, can you show us a picture of your Savery Kettle. Toms suggestion on suspending it is a good idea. Me, I would just get a piece of rebar and lay it across the top, cut it long enough so that it will stick out a few inches on either side, put a piece of garden hose on the rebar where it touches the container, suspend your piece to be cleaned from the center, and then put your black cable on one of the ends of the rebar. This way the rebar doubles as a holder for suspending the item and serves as a conduit for the electricity. And the whole deal costs you near nothing.  ;)

Pretty impressive kettle Michelle!

I have the same dilemna with my new Martin wood stove. After cleaning a few pieces that were easily removed in the electro I am determined to put the whole thing in an electro. I really don't want to undo all those bolts.

Rick had a great idea. He suggested that we make a big hole with the backhoe, line it with heavy poly and use that as my tank. Rick isn't too excited about my new found cast iron love but jumped right in there for a backhoe project :). In fact we need to dig a new septic tank for our workshop so we would be part way there.

Another option I have considered is buying a big poly stock tank. We can always use another for our livestock but they are normally only 24" tall and I would have to lay my oven on its side.

Once you get it cleaned up and seasoned what are you going to do with it? i bet that would feed an army!

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with. Probably sell it. This isn't something that I collect and it's SO big. The price was so good and it looked so nice, I couldn't pass it up. Besides, there was a lady behind me that was talking about buying it... to use as a PLANTER  >:( I just couldn't let that happen.

In our area, the feed stores have plastic drums that are about 55 gallon size, I would think you could make one of them work.

This beastie measures 16.5" across the top. 20" across from handle to handle and 13" tall.

Wow Michelle, that is a big one, a nice big one too. I would think that if you get a plastic drum, as has been said, that this pot will fit it just nicely, that is if you use a flat piece of SS at the far side as your sacrifice piece.  ;)

I don't know how much that would hold, but I have a number 10 Wagner kettle with the offset bottom, to where it fits in the eye of the stove, and it holds just a tad over six gallons if you fill it to about an inch from the top. SO, I don't know how much yours will hold, but, I would say a LOT.  ;D

I have no idea fellas! I don't own a bathroom scale and I think this thing might rupture my postal scale!
