Painted Iron
« on: July 03, 2006, 08:23:51 PM »
As many have stated electro will remove paint from iron pieces with no problem and I have done so several times. I have also bought several really cruded pieces 'cause I knew I could electro with no problem.  I've had only a couple of disappointments and several happy results after the crude was removed.  Now 'the rest of the story',  got a painted W/I and into the electro with the base.  The flat black paint came off easily and I now have a red primered base. The electro (over 18 hrs) has barely softened the primer!  The electro, scrubbing and brushing has reveiled enough to see that it has 'nice sandblasting' underneath!!  The waffle irons are in the electro now and assume the same with them.  Not sure what the end of this will be but wanted to let others know to buy painted items with caution!!  even if you have an electro setup.--It's a # 11 Griswold W/I so is/was a fair piece of iron.  Mike

There's gotta be a special place in h<ll for the person who did all that to your WI and base.  Hope the paddles haven't been blasted.

You got that right.  I just can't believe anyone would do that to a fine piece of iron... it's like driving roofing nails into a piece of fine walnut furniture.  I guess you can't teach stupid.

The @#$&**@#$ blaster didn't stop with just the base- got the irons also!!  The electro is not doing much to the primer.  Will lye do anything to paint?  I went straight to electro so haven't used a lye bath.   Mike

Mike, you might want to be careful with the primer.  The joker might have used a red lead primer.  It's unlikely but who knows.  I've not run into it but I know is is tough and has a very high lead content.

Tom. would that contaminate the soup?  Or worse yet, absorb into the raw iron and contaminate it?

Tom- I thought the same thing, might be red lead.  I'm familiar with the primer from my job. I'd already decided not to use or sell this because of that,  also will clean electro setup and dispose of solution (has red tint to it) when this project is finished and before electroing any thing else. I agree.  Certainly wouldn't want to get crosswise with her.

Boy, you'd really have to be a dummy to use roofing nails on walnut.  Everybody knows that you need drywall screws.  ;)

Sandy, I think Mike is doing the prudent thing in changing solution.  It only costs a couple bucks at the most and you are sure.  Perry would probalby consisder pink solution to be wimpy anyway.

Alright you guys, make sure you spell witch correctly. ;D  But back on topic... I would change out the soup also... pink's not pretty.  But what, if any, effect would the red lead primer have on the iron?  Especially blasted iron?

Mike, you can use regular paint stripper and it wont hurt the iron.  I use a plastic container with a lid and coat the iron good with the stripper, it also will not hurt plastic.  Cover is to keep the chemicals in the stripper (Methylene Chloride) from evaporating so fast.  If it does, just put some more on it.  If you use a MC stripper, just dont get it on your skin, it will burn like fire.  There are non-MC strippers but they dont work as well or as fast on paints.

Thanks Jerry,  I had part of a can of MC stripper and applied to the base.  It's making progress but sure it going to take awhile.

I did get a chip of the primer big enough to get tested.  Through work I have a contact and can get tested for little or no cost (if I don't need the paperwork) so am going to get tested to see if it is lead based or not.  Mike

I spoke with a neighbor with some experience in cleaning metals.  He suggested using "oakite" which should be obtainable from a machine shop or auto parts store.  It is used as a hot solution to clean carburetors, engine blocks, etc.  It's not supposed to have any effect on aluminum either.  He said that even if it was coated with red lead paint that it should remove that also.

Hope you find something that works.      Jerry

I heard of Oakite way back when I was first cleaning iron.   Wonder if it's still being made.  Paint stores sell inexpensive lead test kits with which you can see if that red primer contains lead.  That would be the easy, fast, and cheap way to find out.

Here is the Oakite site along with an 800 number.

Let us know if they have a product for cleaning our cookware.  It should be safe to eat off of after use so check on that.  If it's used hot you will also need a hot tank.  I had a friend who used a hot tank and he cleaned things really fast.

Have 2 pieces that have red primer on them. One is a huge d/o and the electro did not get all of the paint after a week. I coated with mineral oil and put aside. The oven is pitted and I am afraid I can never get it all. Also have a legged # 6 skillet that is gated which is primered.  :-/ :'( :(

Finally finished my blasted, primed, and painted W/I. The only good news on this project is the red primer was not lead based.  I used the stripper and buffing to clean the primer-lots of stripper and buffing!!!!  I never got to the 'Oakite'- too hard headed I guess.  There has to be a better way than the one I used.  The electro never had much of an effect, even with just traces of primer.  With the blasting it still just doesn't look quite right. A couple of pic of the results of this nightmare.  If youv'e never counted there are 128 'nubs' on the irons and they all have 5 sides- losts of Dremel brushes used. :( Mike
