My electro setup - Pics and questions
« on: March 17, 2006, 05:58:23 PM »
"Well", (as Reagan used to say), here is my electro setup.  I've also included pictures of the burner I'm going to restore.

I'm getting some bubbles, but only with small pieces.  No matter what sized piece I'm using the water always gets hot, which means I must be getting current through the water, sufficient amounts in fact to almost boil it.  [smiley=shocking.gif]  The bubbles are a bit disappointing.  I was expecting a raucous frothing and I'll I'm getting is a very fine carbonation emanating from the iron.   [smiley=splat.gif] Also, there is a good deal of white carbonate crud floating on the surface and sticking to the sides.   [smiley=splat.gif] I threw out the old washing soda gunk and switched to PH+.  The detergent was irritating me because it made suds  [smiley=splat.gif]  which prevented me from seeing what was going on, the PH+ doesn't sud.

Is this what I'm supposed to get? Am I screwing up? Is the garbage can acceptable?

Yair, are you sure you have a DC arc welder and not an AC?  I've only used battery chargers but your results are not typical.

OK, the manual does not explicitly state whether the output is AC or DC.  However, in the trouble shooting section, it states that if the rod can't hold an arc you are using a DC welding rod and you should switch to an AC or AC-DC welding rod.

This must mean that it is an AC output, no?

Yes, I'm thinking you probably have an AC arc welder.  What is the make and model number?

At the same time, why would they bother color coding the electrodes if it was AC?   :-?

Sears Craftsman
Model 113.201372
230 Amp Dual Range Arc Welder

AC would explain a great deal.  It would explain why the water was heating up but very little bubbling (right)?

It's been a long time since I've been around ARC welders but I remember DC welders were always labeled DC.  I'll try to find your model on the web.

If you have a battery charger, try it and see if it doesn't clean your stove.

Thanks a bunch.

I bought a battery charger to test but I need to return it because the charger is too "smart" for the job.  It has a microprocessor that figures out I'm up to no good and tells me that it's not hooked up to a battery.  It's one of those yellow Vector brand chargers I picked up at Pep Boys.  Tomorrow I'm heading to Sears.  Maybe they have a cheap DC arc welder or charger.

Yair, FWIW if you get a battery charger, make certain it's a manual operation and not an automatic one.  Sounds like the one you have from Pep Boys is automatic.

Sandy is right, get a simple one without electronics, timer, and etc.  Older used ones are probably just as good or better for the electro process.

This model is an AC welder. DC or AC/DC combo welders will be much more expensive.  Also most DC welders can be changed (by a switch or reversing the leads and be DC+ or DC-) and will be be confusing to hook up correctly for our 'electro' process.  Getting a battery charger will be easier.  Mike

Can somebody here recommend a brand of strong, simple, and inexpensive battery charger and where to get it?  I'm thinking Sears.  All the ones at Pep Boys are "smart" chargers.

My options are Sears, Home Depot, and Lowes.  We also have True Value and Value Home Centers, as well as CarQuest and Advanced Auto Parts.

Yair, Sears has this one on sale on their website through 3/18:

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=AUTO&pid=02871230000&subcat=Battery+Chargers%2C+Boosters+%26+Cables

Don't know if the price is the same in their stores.  Read somewhere on this forum you can order from Sears site and have it delivered to one of their stores for pickup and not pay shipping.  Some stores (not sure about Sears, though) will honor their website prices if lower than their own on identical items in stock.

Beautiful Sandy, that's exactly what I need. I'm hitting Sears tomorrow.  Let's hope it's in stock -- I want it NOW!  ;D
