Time for a new battery charger.
« on: January 29, 2026, 07:52:58 PM »
The orginal battery charger I started my first electro with was an older Crafstman that worked great for about 5-8 years.  Once it went bad a friend of mine loaned me his old one. It was the roll around stile metal cased one about the size of a carry on suitcase.  He needed it back so I am now in the market for a new one.  Are there any go to battery chargers out there that work good for electro setups?  I've been spoiled the last few years, not sure who is still making the ones with the manual setting that doesn't have the safety's built in...

I have heard that if you include a 12V battery in the circuit for the electrolysis, the modern safety features will not be triggered.  I do not yet know if this works, nor do I know which side of the circuit to include the battery.
Best Regards,
Neal

I live in Kansas where we have farm supply stores everywhere you look. And they will have manual battery chargers to choose from.
Mine is a Shumacher sc1437 and has worked well for years. Amazon has them but my farm store price was considerably lower.

Scott,

What happened when it “went bad” and didn’t work?  It could something easy to address, like a bad switch or the circuit breaker.  However, if the failure involved smoke, it might be more difficult to diagnose.  If you are handy with electrical things and have a multimeter, you can check the wiring, switches, and diodes with the charger unplugged, so there is no risk of getting shocked.
