Army no 18 cannon heater barraks woodstove
« on: October 12, 2017, 07:22:45 PM »
Picked this old stove up awhile back and descided to restore and display in the living room.  Put the thing through a big etank I set up just for the stove one part at a time scrubbed and scrubbed the old stove paint they used was some tough stuff. Went back with stove polish and needs a couple more coats of polish.  Thought it turned out nice lucky no cracks or repairs.

Couldnt have done it without all the learning from WAGS,  When I started this project stove guys was saying sandblast and paint.  The casting sand used on this stove was a fine sand so the finish is great as seen on the stove.  Had I followed the sandblast advice it would have etched the surface.  On another note.  I found a screw head cast into the inside of the upper fire chamber where they had plugged a bad spot in the pattern.  Kind of a unique find

Very nice restoration job and something to be very proud of.
Couple questions,
Who actually made the stove, The US Army and US Military generally contract out for things they need. Was there a Cannon Heater or Cannon Stove Company'

It the stove multi fuel(coal/wood/corn)

I'm am still working trying to figure out who cast these. I am amazed at the quality smoothness of the cast iron. Who ever cast cast with same grade of sand as cookware foundries and maybe even finer.  Thing I found amazing was I asked around on some stove forums on tips for restoration most advice was sandblast and paint. Had i followed the advice it would have ruined the quality of casting
