Photo storage
« on: December 19, 2016, 11:50:48 AM »
I know what most of you think about Photobucket, but is there a photo storage/sharing site that you do think is good? Not for pics to share here, but to have them somewhere safe if the computer crashes. I don't want to lose some of the pics I have.

If you are just looking to store, not share, Drop Box is a cloud storage site to consider. Choosing a backup method also depends on what device you take most of your photos with. If you use your phone a lot, either the manufacturer or the service provider should have a cloud backup system for your specific device or account. You could just buy a 2 to 4 TB USB backup drive to maintain control of them yourself. Burning them to DVD from a backup drive is easy then. You can store them in a fireproof box then to protect your treasures from computer crashes, remote server loss, hacking, the Russians, or any other unforseen event. You really should have some kind of hard copy or redundant series of backup drives if you really really really want protection from loss.

I store all of my photos onto a USB thumb drive. I have 3 kids with about 4 to 5 thousand pictures. I scan on my printer and send to the computer. I have pictures from the early 1900's.each picture has a number of my making. I also have a downloaded file explaining each picture. It is time consuming but in the long run well worth it.

I also use thumb drives, not just for photos but also for sewing machine manuals(hundreds), I also have all of my passwords and logon ID stored on a thumb drive, They are cheap and work anywhere you can plug in a USB device.

I had an external hard drive for storage but the mother board on it crashed and I can buy a lot of thumb drives for the price of one external hard drive and there are no moving parts to crash or wear out on a thumb drive

Thanks everyone. I never thought of a thumb drive. No idea why, since all the kids in school used them for projects.

I didn't want just storage. I also wanted to be able to share on things like FB.

I do full back ups to external hard drive.

Also use flash drives (32 to 64 GB) for file storage.

Plus, I have networked computers, so I can throw stuff over onto the Bedroom computer that doesn't get used much anymore......

How many also have off site backup storage? It's great to have backups, but what happens in case of fire, flood, theft, or other loss of data. Having a thumb drive or backup hard drive is good you also need a offsite backup to protect your data including pictures. I use one that allows me to backup and restore my data I select across the internet.

External hard drives are getting really cheap.  I bought two of them (1TB each). I backed up everything on those and keep one at my place and one at my parents (just in case of fire, etc).  A couple times a year I put all the new photos taken this year on the hard drives.  That way I know they are still working.  If one of them fails I would buy another.  It's cheap insurance for the number of pictures and memories I have stored.

I also have an external hard drive here.  Two actually.

Just bought a new computer since my old one started the Click of Death.  Was able to get everything off and didn't need the back-up.

The guy we use for computer issues set up the new computer for me.  He said younger people these days store everything on the cloud and have nothing on their computer.  Computer issue?  Throw it out and buy a new one.
