Cooking shows with cast iron.
« on: February 28, 2016, 02:50:03 PM »
This seems to be the latest and greatest new or rediscovered trend in cooking that we have known about for years.

Yesterday I turned on the TV for a dose of cooking shows on Food Network. First up was Pioneer Woman with Rhee Drumond and as usual she was cooking in cast iron. Next up was Trisha's Southern cooking with Trisha Yearwood and she had a whole show cooking with her beloved Lodge skillet and even went a help a friend get a cast iron pan. Last I watched was The Kitchen and it was cooking Southern Fried Chicken in of course cast iron. Last night on PBS we had Lydia's Italian cooking show and she was using enameled cast iron Dutch ovens to cook with. Not Lodge but the fancy French ones.

Seems the use of cast iron is making a big comeback and one the shows it is product placement by Lodge. When we have people over and they see my modest collection of cast iron and ask about it my wife rolls her eyes and think first it is the cast iron and cooking next it will be the guns and politics. ;D

Have y'all seen the same resurgence?

It is really popular right now and doesn't show signs of slowing down.

Yes! I watch a fair amount of Food Network and I can't think of a single show where someone doesn't use something cast iron. Including the kids on their cooking competition shows.

In addition to see cast iron on cooking shows, I have notice restaurants are serving meals, particularly side dishes, in cast iron, 8-)

You're probably going to see even more cast iron in restaurants with Lodge's new treatment that allows them to be run through a dishwasher.

Hello Dwayne. From what we know, thats doin something if Lodge can make a piece of cast iron that will not lose its seasoning if it is run through a dishwasher.  :o :o :o

I'm gonna have to have me one of them pieces just to check it out.

Ran across a show last night called "The Taste of History"

 http://www.pbs.org/food/shows/a-taste-of-history/

The chef uses cast iron d/o's and 3 legged(tall)  steel skillets to cook with. His heat source is a BIG step in hearth
where he cooks directly on the coals or fire inside the kitchen! INTERESTING [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

If all it takes to remove seasoning is run it thru the dishwasher, why do we need lye baths and e-tanks

The popularity explains why about 5 years ago I could type in cast iron skillet in my local craigslist and would have 2 pages of stuff for sale.  now there is one or two listings.  I used to be able to buy car loads for next to nothing.  Now all the local shops are wanting $50.00 for the newer lodge #8 that I can get at rural king for $15.00.
