Seeking information about lid handle
« on: November 05, 2018, 11:50:32 AM »
I have several lids which do not have what I would call a handle.  Instead they have more of a "tab" with a hole through it.  Are these lids missing a piece?
Possibly a handle part?
How are (were) they used?
Some of mine have wire added..
Attaching a pic
THANKS!!

This is the way they were cast.
I have several BSR camp ovens with this tab on the lids.
A lid lifter fits in the hole.
I believe someone else will come on and explain the why's of this Tab better than I can.

Thanks for the reply.  As I'm sure you can tell, I am new to cast iron and trying to learn.

David, you can see a few more on this post...

The tab handle lids were produced by ASW/BSR when they began using the Disamatic Molding machines in 1966.

More information can be found here (scroll down to 1966)

There are also a few Asian produced tab lids that have been seen.

Interesting... that would mean the grandmother that I inherited these from probably got them after she passed away.  I'm going to have to look into the family story further.  It is funny how the truth can be a surprise sometimes.

Thanks for the info!!

I was thinking the tab on your lid looked a little different than my BSR lids.
The bottom of your lid doesn't look like the BSR lids I have seen.
Will be interesting to see if anyone has some ideas about your lid.
