Some are bent, while others are just missing.  Should that impact the collect ability or price?

Absolutely... alterations to the original piece destroy the values...

How does one tell if it's been replaced?  If it was recently, I assume it would be obvious, however, if a handle was replaced back in the 40's or 50's, how would an amateur tell the difference?  Thank you for your input!!

Try to find some examples on ebay. Zoom in on the photos showing the bail. Each foundry had their own bail and attachment style. Get to know what you are looking for. In my experience, most replacements look like replacements. And about missing bails, are you looking for a collector piece or a user piece? It depends on the use.

And to further confuse the issue, some didn't have a bail.
