Cast iron safety
« on: April 29, 2017, 11:02:13 AM »
I am going to attempt to recondition a Wagner skillet that I got last weekend. Of course I'm not sure what was ever cooked in it, but has food safety ever been a concern from anyone's past experiences? I don't have any suspicion there is anything wrong with it, you just never know if someone tried to paint it etc at some point. Thanks!!!

Welcome to WAGS Ron,  Check out the Cleaning and restoration link at the top of page. Lots of great info there.

It will be no problem Ron.  The process of cleaning the skillet, if you strip if down to bare iron, and reheating/seasoning process will kill any pathogens.

I have found several painted skillets over the year. Make sure to clean it to bare metal and it should be fine.
