Can anyone id this Scotch bowl for me.  I think it's a Gris but I'm not sure.  The markings on the bottom are unclear.  I got it home from an antique store in Vermont only to find these ugly cracks.  >:(. No wonder it was marked for only $30.[/img][/img][/img]

Looks to me like your markings would have said "Griswold's ERIE," which was a marking that they used just before they switched to the familiar cross-and-circle logo.  781 was Griswold's p/n for a size 3 Scotch Bowl.

When in doubt, check the bail attachment ears.  Ears of the type on this bowl, which are flush with the top of the bowl but provide for a bail stop when lifting and pouring contents, were patented by Griswold.  There are some other kettles that used them too, I think, with or without Griswold's knowledge, but usually those ears are indicative of Griswold.

Too bad about the cracks.  My 781 was also an oops purchase of mine -- terribly pitted.  It's the only piece I ever rotary wire-brushed, and that was just because it was already so far gone that I figured I couldn't possibly hurt it.

Thanks for the info and sympathy. I'll just admire it's historic value as a centerpiece rather than a wonderful cooking pot.  :)
