Help ID a couple skillets please
« on: July 27, 2016, 07:08:23 PM »
I am watching an auction right now and it ends this evening.   I would like the BSR No 8, but it's already at $30ish.   Any ideas what the pan on the right or the small pan laying down are?  The handle.looks familiar on the small one but I didn't have any luck finding a similar one.

Couple more pics.   Unfortunately these are the best pics they have. :/

Understand as you read this response that I'm typing it with my entire foot firmly inserted into my own mouth up to the molars, since I don't collect Vollrath and don't really need to ID it at a glance, but I'll tentatively, sheepishly suggest that the handle on the skillet lying down looks Vollrath-ish to my unaccustomed eye.  They made a lot of unmarked pans that just had a size number, but usually the number was cast on sideways, I think.  Check your red book, if you have one.  I just checked mine, and then I opened up and swallowed toes.

Unfortunately,  I do not have a red book. Just a blue book. Guess what's next on my list.  Lol Thank you very much.

I also sticking my foot out but in the top picture the one on the right might be a unmarked Wagner by the handle.

It's already pushing $50.  These things really take off.  The BSC seems to do really well on goodwill

Possible BSR... Possible Newer Wagner... and Vollrath.

Without closer more defined picts that show markings... it is a crap shoot.

Reasons why I have NEVER bid anything on Goodwill.....

BSR was also heavily copied and 'reproduced'... and that heat ring looks inset a bit over what I would expect to see...  or it could be a less than good pic...

There's a close up of the marking on the BSR.

About the #3 skillet:
It's hard to tell from the photo whether it's a Vollrath or one of the unmarked #3 skillets that turn up from time to time and are often mistaken for a Vollrath.  They have a similar handle, a heat ring, and a nice smooth finish.  They don't have the sideways number of an unmarked Vollrath.  I've attached photos of one of these mysterious #3 skillets.  I have come across quite a few (at least a dozen) here in Virginia, and have bought several.  They're nice skillets but there's no evidence, as far as I know, as to who made them. I suppose Vollrath could have made some totally unmarked skillets, but I haven't heard anyone discuss that possibility.

I believe that I've seen these little unmarked skillets discussed on the forum, but I wasn't sure how to search to find a link.  Searching under "skillet" or "unmarked" seemed somewhat futile!   :D

Thank you guys very much for all the info.  I passed on this auction and went and bid on and won a couple others.  :)

We have one of those #3 skillets. It was sold to us as a Vollrath. There are many other 'mystery' skillets (as my usual guy calls them) in these parts. No one knows who made them, and probably no one ever will.

Cheryl,
Is the little one in my photos a Vollrath?  And if it is, is it the handle that's the tip off?  The tiny "3" on the underside of the handle tip is often on there.  I see these unmarked #3s really often--more often than I see marked Vollraths.  And they're usually a bargain, usually $3 to $5 after the haggling.

The Vollrath handle is just so distinctive, yes.  Also the number on top of the handle.

What I believe is that Vollrath evolved, and the unmarked skillets were quite likely from the end of the CI production era... in the 60's... JMO.

I think your little one is Vollrath.

I am not fond of the later Vollrath's.  Somewhere around here I have a #8 that I call my Fugly skillet.  Heavy as all get out, and not the greatest Casting... but I think I gave $2 for it.  :P  I also have a stack of some 3's sitting... somewhere... maybe I'll find them soon out in the Garage, as I am trying to find my 'lost' stacks...  ::)

PS... I very rarely pay any attention to any markings on the underside of handles, numbers or letters, because other than a pattern mark, the purpose will probably never be known, except to the manufacturer... :)

Thank you!  That's useful info.

I saw another #3 like that today, but it was no bargain.  It was in an antique shop where all the very ordinary CI had huge price tags.  The unmarked Vollrath #3 was $24.  A #5 Wagner General Housewares skillet was $29!  It was ridiculous.
