What's a Pattern and a Mold?
« on: June 26, 2016, 06:14:06 PM »
We are having quite a few new people come by and sometimes the terms are a bit confusing. A pattern is used to make sand molds, sometimes thousands of sand molds. These can be pretty pricey, on the Lodge tour we were told some cost $25,000. This beautiful pattern is of a pair of Lodge skillets.

After the DISA-Matic (automatic molding machine) packs the sand around the pattern, the pattern is removed and both sides of the sand mold is pushed together. This creates the void the molten iron will be poured into. This picture shows 1/2 of the mold of those Lodge skillets. A mold is only used once.

Talk about a picture being worth a thousand words, those photos certainly explain the process well.  Thanks Dwayne,
