Better to give...
« on: February 19, 2015, 08:49:06 AM »
A couple I've known for  few years through a local antique shop, had their trailer burn down about 3 months ago. Almost complete devastation, years of collecting antiques and stuff. A partially burned old picture of the young couple was found, and the owner of the shop had it covertly restored/drawn/reproduced (?) by a very good artist. I heard yesterday the couple was at the antique shop, and they wanted to buy a skillet from me. They've got a new trailer being hooked up to utilities on their land, and starting to furnish it. When I heard about their trailer burning, I picked out a #8 Vollrath skillet to give them as a housewarming present, so I went around the corner to the shop. They agreed that was what they were looking for, and asked how much. When I told them it was a housewarming present, on top of everything other people had done for them and given them, almost tears. This couple had worked for everything they had every had, raised their family, helped with grandchildren, and were not used to accepting gifts and help from anyone. It was quite an eye-opening experience for them to realize how respected and loved they were by so many people.

Good for you, Jeff!

Isn't it ironic that some people that deserve help the most are the least likely to ask for it while some that have done nothing for anyone else their entire lives so often have their hands out?

That's a great story Jeff.  I know we all take many things for granted. They are fortunate to have so many friends that they may or may not have known about.

A very good deed, Jeff.  Very touching that they appreciated your help but didn't feel they needed it.
