Another one For the Collection... Finally
« on: February 03, 2015, 02:45:31 AM »

Pics are as found/received....

It will receive the complete redo to meet my picky, picky specifications, because I see some rust that is still lurking in places...
and the Mineral oil treatment for display pieces.  :)

but danged nice condition...

So...
a replacement for the poor, poor, pitted Clows that I rescued and which will now become a nice user....

Hello Cheryl. Congratulations on the new piece. It looks like it's in very nice condition. There is a number nine Clows but I don't ever recall seeing one. Have you?

Not Cheryl, but I didn't think the 9 existed until I saw two of them at Larry's.

Darn, they were too big to fit in my pocket though :'(.

That is a nice iron and the seller did a pretty good job of cleaning it up.  I do see the rust though.  If you need it, I have a spare paddle in good shape.  It even has the B on the handle.  My set does not have the B so it's not a good spare for me.  Hate miss-matched stuff.

Good old Oscar Clows.

Mark, a search will pop up lots of information.  I've even visited the apartment house he built with his recording studio in the basement.  I think I've shared a couple of his song recording in the past.

Here's a link to an overall, brief history.  (sorry folks, it's on the dark side, WAGS members only).

As a teaser, I've attached an ad for the iron and flour and Oscars own directions for making waffles.

Tom

Just when I thought I knew everything(in my extremely young collecting start) then I see something like this.

Beautiful!!

Thanks Tom, I had no idea...great reading! :)
So.. in Joyce's letter she mentions "his patented waffle machines". Does that mean these Griswold WI's, or something different?

Mark, I believe these were jobbed to Griswold by Clows.  The hinge is unique to this iron as well as the lettering.  He did patent his waffle mix recipe and had another for asphalt shingles but I didn't see one for the waffle iron.  It would have been tough to patent as that's pretty much a Wagner hinge.

I was just looking at some Clows hinges and I don't get how they work. Just two flat surfaces...do they lock together somehow?

There is one of those in an antique store I frequent but I have 7 other waffle irons I need to clean before I will even think of buying it.
