Cast Iron Pot Belly Stove

Does anyone own a pot belly stove. There is one coming up for auction locally. I wonder if they are good for cooking and warming a deck in the evening. In general how do other people make use of them?

Dave: I'm 71 years old and I remember country stores in the 50's usually having one of these things usually located in the center of the store. They would be sitting in a container with sand in it so the men could sit around and spit tobacco juice in the sand. They were normally used as a heater and not a "stove". I don't know where the term stove came from in describing them. I have seen them red hot and the stove pipe would also be red for several feet up. Amazing they didn't burn the store. Look carefully on the inside to make sure the grate is not burned out. Hope you enjoy it.

They can be a PITA since most were meant for coal. If you only want to use wood, it will have to be smaller chunks. Does the one you're looking at have mica in the door? Easy to buy replacements pieces BTW & it would be pretty on the deck. I've never seen one used out side - how would you support enough of a stack so it would draft properly? As for cooking, the less fancy ones usually have an eye on top that might work for chili if you didn't make a roaring fire. Sue

I've never seen one used out side - how would you support enough of a stack so it would draft properly?

Here's the stove on the auction website. 2nd row on the bottom row of pictures. Would those legs make it high enough to draft properly? I was going to put brick slabs under it ... if I get it. I'm thinking maybe it would be too much of a PITA now.

The auction does list a Griswold #8 waffle iron and a tobacco cutter. The waffle iron I might try to get if it's in decent condition but I'm not too interested in the tobacco cutter. If anyone here is let me know and perhaps I can bid on it for you.
