Griswold Silver Dollar Pancake Plett Griddle
« on: December 28, 2014, 08:26:45 AM »
Was out shopping yesterday and stopped by a local shop and they had a Griswold Silver Dollar Pancake Plett Griddle hanging on the wall, I looked at it briefly but when I saw the $65.00 price tag I did not look any closer at it , Is the price too high(I thought it was) Are there variations that are more desirable than others, I plan on going back in the next few days to take a closer look and maybe snap a few pics but wanted to be armed with some info so I could possibly make a decision when I go pack.
Thanks
Valerie

Susan, I've never heard of a Griswold Silver Dollar Pancake Plett Griddle. Is it a handled Plett pan like this one?:

Did you get the p/n? Value would depend on the p/n. Some are worth more than others.  ;)

Hi Mark, Looks like a round Griddle with round shallow depressions for the pancakes, has a handle, I did not get the part number because after I saw the price tag I became disinterested, I intend on going back and taking another look and getting some pics if possible, Until then I was just hoping to gather some more info. Looks very similar to the example in your reply however I do not know what the bottom looks like because I did not look at the bottom after I saw the asking price

Hi Valerie, Don't know why I called you Susan, lol..sorry bout that. Well if it's a small logo number 34 (p/n 2980)like that one, I would say you could do better. Large logo is worth a little more, slant logo a little more,  and a p/n of 969 is worth quite a bit more....$100-125 in the blue book.

Edit: here's a link for completed listings on ebay to give you an idea on current value. There hasn't been any for the 969 pan..guessing it's probably worth more than Blue book value now. But there are some that say "silver dollar pancake pan" on the box so I learned something today. They sell for less than $65.

Hi Mark...no problem on calling me Susan,As far as the pan I am going to go back and take a second look but based on what is showing on eBay I think I made the right choice not purchasing it for $65.00, I may make an offer on it and see what happens.

I've attached a summary of the variations of the Andresen, Western Importing and Griswold plett pans.  Any of the Andresen pans are over 100 years old and of good quality.  The first Western importing pan is nice.

Griswold BN1-4 are very nice, high quality pans.  BN5 is pretty decent and likely the last made in Erie.  BN5 (marked 2980A) is very common but sells for stupid high prices.  $40 would be more than enough for one of these.

Beginning with BN6, these are made by Wagner with the Griswold name on them.  Not as desireable but work just fine.  Wouldn't pay much for them.

This is just a summary of the information that is available to members.  If the pan you saw is a BN 1 or 2, $65 isn't that awfully high.  Top of market, but nice, uncommon pans.

Tom

(p.s., I had to really compress this so the detail is poor.  If you can take a picture of the pan you are interested in and I'll tell you more about it.)

The pictures are so compressed in the pdf as to be quite difficult to use.  I'll post better pictures of what I consider to be the desirable Griswold pans (made in Erie, not Sidney).  The first 4, with the larger logo are less common but seem to sell for less than the very common 2980A.

The last few, with the 969 milled bottom thrown in.  If that is what you saw, grab it, that is a real bargain.  A very uncommon pan, with anything less than $150 being a good deal, IMO.

Thanks Tom, It won't be until after the new year when I will have a chance to go back and look at it.
