Weekend Buys
« on: June 03, 2014, 06:42:37 AM »
Acquired alot of stuff over the weekend. 3 items I like:

An old 3 legged skillet pot with lid, bottom gate. There's a number 8 on the lid, and a raised "W" on the bottom of the skillet. Obviously camp iron, but no idea who made it or when. Lots of work to do on it, but I love it. 7 photos. Then a Wagner Ware 5 star, pretty good shape. Then an older Wagner number 7, heat rim, etc. I know this is old hat to many of you, but I just don't run across 3 things like this in the same weekend, 3 different garage sales.

Old Wagner number 7. Love the light weight of these pre 1920 skillets. Seasoning came off the handle--very shiny underneath.

Last of the pics of the no 7. There's a nick on the underside of the handle, but doesn't bother me  :)

Also got a nice no-name dutch oven, an older Lodge, a number 3 Griswold and some other stuff that I haven't looked at too closely yet.

Frank,
It sure looks like you are having fun! I like that camp skillet, nice handle. I don't think that is the original lid though. It would have had a camp oven style lid, like on a Lodge, with a rim to hold the coals on. That looks like an old Favorite Dutch oven lid to me.

Your Wagner 7 may be plated in nickel under the crud.

I agree with Chris about the camp skillet lid. It looks Favorite to me also.

The 5 star skillet looks like it should cleanup well and it is all together. Some of us here have picked up one half and then picked up the other, only to find out that they don't always fit.(different style handles)

Nice finds and good pictures !!!  ;)

I am wondering if the spider skillet lid may have had the rim cut off??  There is a  groove on the underside which reminds me of the CO lids...

Gosh, never even occurred to me that the lid didn't go with the camp skillet. It fits, but IS a little wobbly. Cher, I don't think anything was cut off that I can tell. If so, they did a fine job. It has a lip on the downside, is that what you're talking about?

Two other things--do you call the camp skillet a "spider" skillet? And is the "W" on the bottom just a mold or worker mark?

Could be. Can I still soak it in lye and electrocute it as usual to clean it?

I went and checked out some E-bay Favorite dutch ovens to get a look at their lids. I can see the handle similarity, in that they have a similar welded "arrow" at the base. However, the lids seemed to all have broken concentric drip rings and a lot higher dome. This one is flat with no drip aids at all. Inset lip. Wouldn't be for a skillet, no pour extensions. I saw an Erie dutch oven that had the lower profile--couldn't really see the handle well. Now I'm REALLY curious. Look what you've done to me!  :-X

Cheryl, I believe it is just a old flat top dutch oven lids. I have one like the one that Frank has shown us. It is a Wapak cover with a ghost pattern number of an Erie cover. Mine is a size #9 but it looks exactly like the one shown above, except for the handle on the cover. Companies barrowed heavily form one another back then. :)

Frank, I would clean it as you would any other skillet but I think you will find that a lot of the nickel platting will be worn off. It doesn't affect the way it cooks, it just looks different.

Mark, is it possible that it IS an Erie cover? I've not seen one. Are they marked?

I really believe that the cover is a very early Favorite cover. I think that they might have borrowed the pattern from Erie? Either way it is from the early 1900. Maybe a little before.

The legs make it a camp skillet.  The legs were why they originally refered to them as "spiders".   The name has carried over to basically any skillet.
