One More for the Set
« on: August 29, 2009, 06:59:10 PM »
Picked this one up today. It was the only piece listed at this auction. My hunch about there being mor iron there was incorrect. I've seen some auction ads that list "Griswold Skillet", gone to the auction, and there are 2 tables full of Griswold.
Either way, I needed this one for my set that I'm putting together. I already have the trivet (not pictured) from a seperate auction. It's been waiting in storage for the rest to show up. The #11 is next. Of course, the #8 seems to be avoiding me. I haven't found a good one yet. I do have a bottom, and a trivet, but I can't find the right lid for it.
This one is a bit crusty to say the least. It's in the tank now, and should be done sometime tomorrow.

Chuck I am glad to hear that you actually got this D/O!  Are you going for the whole set of ovens without the applied handles?  I cannot believe that you are having trouble finding and 8!   ;D ;D ;D  That one seems a little hard for me to believe with way that you and your wife scour those auctions.

Chuck, I like the dutch ovens like that. That was the first set I really started on to complete. I never even tried to get the trivets, thats a whold nuther ballgame. And then, I already had a number 8, and then I got a number 9, and the 7 was easy, the 10 not too bad, and then the six was a little tougher, then the 11, that hurt some, and then I got a good deal on a 13, it was covered with carbon, everybody ran from it but me, I got a good deal on it, or I think I did anyway, and then the 12 was left, the elusive 12, I think thats the hardest trivet to get, but, I did get one, and to make matters worse, well not really, they had two and I got choice, so I got my 12. Now that I think about it though, I wish I would have bought them both, those were the only two that I have ever seen, and on ebay, you don't see them very often at all. Anyway, thats my dutch oven story.

And I also have a brand new griswold number 11 dutch oven, it was new when I got it, beautiful in every way, and it is a smooth top, so I use it to cook with sometimes. Its a good size, big enough to be big, but small enough to handle it.

Jeff,
You bet. I need to find the correct lid for my #6. It has an applied handle. I picked it up, figuring I could just find another lid, then sell the one that is on it to cover the cost. I have no idea about the #8. Just can't seem to find the right one. At this point, all I actually need is a lid, but it would be nice to find a complete DO.

Perry,
I'm not holding out too much hope for the 11, 12, and 13. I'm starting to run into the Big Bucks for DO's now. I'll have to stop looking, and they will just show up at an auction. I need some of that luck that you had on the #13. I've only seen one of those in person, and it was a mess. Warped, pitted, and I believe it had a crack. It went for over $1000 I believe. I don't recall the exact price because i was laughing too much when it went that high.  ;D ;D

When you're ready to sell the brand new #11 Perry, let me know. ;)

Chuck, I am like Joel Schiff, he won't sell you nothing. If you ain't got something he wants to trade on, forget it.  ;D

So, you sure do get a lot of stuff, maybe we can trade on something. I got what it takes to fill them holes in your dutch oven set.  ;)

You seem to need everything that I don't have, but you never know.  ;D The proper #6 lid, and the #8 DO are what I'm looking for first, but if I have, or find something you really need, maybe we could add another piece. Let me know.

I can't take credit for this one. I pulled the #10, and it's lid, out of the electro, and had to run to a friends house to help on a construction project. While I was gone, the wife (Deb) scrubbed it up, and seasoned it beautifully. I knew there was a reason I married her. I think I'll keep her.  ;D

My wife hates the smell also, and if worse comes to worse, I have a 16' x 24' outbuilding that we built about 2 years ago. I can season in that. I just need to steal the stove, and move it out there. And of course, add cable TV.  ;D ;D

My 17 year old daughter is REALLY CRANKY about that "black iron black lung" smell, and stomps around fake coughing and gagging whenever I'm cooking iron.  :P

It's gotten so dramatic I schedule all my iron cooking for Tuesdays, because that's when she works all afternoon at the local library.  (She's homeschooled so I don't have the luxury of privacy from 8-3 most days, like other homemakers.)
