What is it?
« on: August 24, 2009, 06:42:42 PM »
Found this today.  I couldn’t pass it up for $10.00, since I like learning about the more unusual items. It measures 12” from handle to handle, and the round indentations are 1 ¼” in diameter. Bottom reads “Koopmans Meelfabrieken Leeuwarden”. I learned that Leeuwarden is a town in the Netherlands, but I have no idea who made it, how old it is, or what you are supposed to make with it. (it seems small for aebleskivers?)  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Brian.....What you have is a poffertjes pan.  It makes a small puffy mini pancake treat very similar to an aebleskiver.  You make them about the same way, and then sprinkle powdered sugar on them when done.  Koopmans also make the poffertjes mix to go along with the pan.  They are fun to make and very tasty......C.B. would probably try to make stuffed mushrooms or escargot in it......might just work too.... ;D ;D

Scott

EDIT......Try this         http://www.bing.com/search?q=www.koopmans.com&go=&form=QBLH&qs=n       Click on "translate this page", and see what you can find.

EDIT 2.....Here is a recipe for poffertjes....
         http://www.hollandshop.com/recipes/94900%20Koopmans%20Mix%20for%20Poffertjes.htm

I don't usually add the suryp, but you can try the blueberry or any other flavor if you want.

Thanks for the information Scott. After I clean this up, I guess I’m going to be making poffertjes! They look delicious. I went to a link that sells Koopmans products, and it appears they currently only offer a Teflon poffertjes pan. Any ideas on how old this one might be?
Thanks,
Brian

The stuffed mushrooms idea sounds great also.

Brian.....I am not quite sure on the age of the pan.  I have had mine for a while now, and when I was looking, I was looking for a cast iron one.  I think I got this one off of feebay.  If you search ebay for "poffertjes"  there used to be a seller from Australia that sold the pans and offered the family secret recipe, but I didn't get mine from them.  Maybe someone else can come up with an age.  Maybe if we knew the foundry in the Netherlands.  Have fun.

Scott

EDIT........Try this url....  http://tinyurl.com/lf8vpf  ......shipping from Australia will kill you though!!!

Scott beat me to the answer.  I have the identical pan.  It took me the longest time to figure out what it was for.  At one time I thought it might be used to make vanilla wafers.   Poffertjes are a little different in that they are leavened.  Here's a link to some of the pans and supplies.  The little fork is nice to flip them with.

And another big time supplier from Australia.  They are a big seller at fairs in Europe (looks like Austrailia too!).

Meelfabrieken loosely translated mean Flour Maker.
