ideas for how to store CI skillets
« on: August 12, 2009, 04:02:06 PM »
I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this question in..so feel free to move it :)

Having recently acquired  ironitus, I seem to be quickly accruing more skillets that I have room for in my kitchen stove and counter tops.  I do not want to store them stacked on shelves because the level of humidity here will ensure rusting.

I am thinking of hanging my skillets on the walls (made of sheet rock) in the kitchen.  Any ideas on how best to do this?  My husband is handy with tools but not much of a carpenter.  I also though of trying to make one of those hanging racks on which one could hang pots and pans...but then I have visions of the whole thing crashing down one day...  Has anyone made one of those before?  I like to cook in all of my CI regularly, so having them handy is a must (especially when tying to faithfully rotate through my collection).

I have seen some pictures of fellow WAG member's homes with entire walls filled with hanging CI - what a pretty site!  Who needs paint or wall paper...just hang some iron.

Two suggestions. The best way to hang your CI ln Sheet Rock walls is to use Chair Rail molding (1-1/2 or 2" wide), screw the molding to the studs in the wall, paint as desired, then drive in nails or srews to hang your iron as desired

The other, go to Sam's Club and purchase some Stainless Steel shelves and maybe Lowes/Home Depot and buy some 60# "S" hooks, assemble the shelves, then hang away. You can hang up to 21 skillets on the bottome of one shelve.
Seen it all. Done it all. Can't remember most of it!

What I have done at my fish camp is screw a 1 by 8 to the wall studs (sheet rock walls) screw in some medium duty hooks (not cup hooks)we use matte black so not to take away frome the iron like a bright metal would, then start hanging, oh!!! we paint the board a color that coordinates with the room. Around our house and camp cast iron coorinates with everything!!!!!

No they aren's sitting flat. I put a couple paper towels in each one, then slide 3 of these black cable clamps over the bottom rim. That way you can't see the paper towels and the cover sits above the base allowing plenty of air circulation.

Note: Above post edited because I couldn't spell worth a snit.

That only some of them and you would be amazed at how many can be stacked under the cabinets behind the doors on the bottoms.

Mark,   I have nothing really displayed in my house,  YET!   I got to ask this question.....What do you hang your skillets by on the walls????   You don't have all the hangers in studs,  do you?

Thanks,

Will

PS  I LOVE that long cabinet you have in post 11 and 14!!!!!

This is an 130 year old Michigan house which is either a curse or blessing. When we went to remodel we found that the walls were rough cut lumber 18 to 24 inches wide and 3 1/2 thick. They were laid end to end to make the wall. I guess that wood was cheap then. So to make a long story short, I can hang anything, anywhere in this room and not worry about it.

On most of them I use 3 inch deck screws. The heads on these will fit through most of the handle holes but on some of the others I have to resort to nails. The screws with a cordless drill makes removal and adjustments easier. Also if you want to look at the skillet or use it it is quick and easy.
